RADFORD, Va. – With Mother Nature forcing the two Big South foes to play a doubleheader on Sunday, No. 20 Coastal Carolina completed the series sweep, outscoring Radford 14-6 in the double dip at a windy RU Baseball Stadium. The sweep marked the first time the Highlanders had been swept at home in Big South action since the 2013 season.

GAME ONE

Radford starter Dylan Nelson struck out four Coastal Carolina batters in the opening two frames of the first game of the doubleheader. With two outs in the top of the third, Nelson looked for his third consecutive scoreless frame.

Coastal Carolina plated three runs in the two-out rally on an Anthony Marks single and Michael Paez two-run home run, taking an early 3-0 lead.

The bottom half of the inning saw the Radford bats string together a couple scoring opportunities of its own. RU loaded the bases on a Colby Higgerson walk, a Luke Wise single and a Chris Coia sacrifice bunt that led to a Chanticleer error.

Danny Hrbek came through with the bases loaded, lining a single into right field, plating Higgerson and Wise as the Highlanders pulled within 3-2 of the Chanticleers.

Radford knotted the game at three in the bottom of the fourth as Jordan Taylor walked and Kyle Butler followed with a single. With runners on first and second, Higgerson ripped a RBI single up the middle, scoring Taylor from second base.

The Chanticleers battled back with a Marks RBI single in the fifth and Connor Owings RBI single in the sixth, controlling a 5-3 lead.

Following another Owings RBI single in the top of the eighth, Radford plated another run off the bat of Higgerson on a fielders' choice, cutting the deficit to 6-4.

Coastal Carolina added an insurance run in the ninth on Marks' third RBI single of the contest as the Chanticleers captured game one, 7-4.

Win: Andrew Beckwith (4-1) (5.2 IP, 3 H, 1R/0ER, 3 BB, 4 K)
Loss: Dylan Nelson (0-7) (5.0 IP, 5 H, 4R/4ER, 1 BB, 6 K)

GAME TWO

The Chanticleers opened game two of the double dip with three consecutive singles, scoring their first run on a Zach Remillard sac fly.

Radford came out of the gates swinging in the bottom half of the inning as Kyle Butler lined a first pitch single to left field and Shane Johnsonbaugh drilled a first pitch double off the right-center field wall, putting runners on the corners.

Following a Hrbek strikeout, Trevor Riggs walked to load the bases. The Highlanders tied the game at one on a RBI groundout from Jonathan Gonzalez.

The tie was short lived as Coastal Carolina got the run back on a Seth Lancaster RBI single in the top of the second.

Leading 2-1 in the top of the fourth, the Chanticleers put together a big inning at the dish, scoring four runs on five hits. Two of the runs came off the bat of Remillard on a two-run single.

The fourth inning looked to be kind to both squads as Radford loaded the bases on a Gonzalez single, followed by walks from Nygeal Andrews and Chandler Davis.

With the bases loaded and no outs, the Highlanders hottest hitter in the lineup stepped up to the plate. Higgerson came through with a RBI fielders' choice, putting Highlanders on the corners with only one out. Radford was unable to capitalize, stranding the two runners.

Marks fourth RBI on the day gave Coastal Carolina a 7-2 lead in the top of the seventh as the Highlanders only managed one hit in the final four innings.

Win: Austin Kitchen (2-0) (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K)
Loss: Mitchell MacKeith (3-2) (3.2 IP, 11 H, 6R/6ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

QUOTABLE
  • "We are struggling right now and it's my job to fix it. We are not playing up to our ability and have made a couple of uncharacteristic mistakes lately. Colby [Higgerson] has found a lot of confidence at the plate and it is nice to see that from him. I'm glad to see him be more productive and aggressive offensively. ~ Radford head coach, Joe Raccuia
