ROCK HILL, S.C. – Chris Coia went 4 for 5 at the plate as Radford dropped a 3-2 extra inning titanic struggle to Winthrop, Friday night in Big South action. The four-hit contest was the fifth of Coia's career.

With only one hit though the first three innings, Trevor Riggs ended the streak with a solo blast to left-center field, giving the Highlanders an early 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth.

RU starter Zack Ridgely took the lead and retired the Eagles for his second straight three up, three down inning to end the fourth frame.

Sam Kmiec punched out three Highlanders in the top of the fifth and Kyle Edwards followed with a solo home run of his own in the bottom half of the inning, knotting the game at one.

The top of the sixth saw Chris Coia lead off the inning with his second hit, but was retired on a Colby Higgerson fielders' choice. With Higgerson on first and a 3-2 count, Shane Johnsonbaugh ripped a hit-and-run single into right field, putting runners on the corners.

Danny Hrbek stepped up the plate in a prime RBI opportunity. Hrbek lined a bullet to Edwards at shortstop, who threw on to first in an attempt to double-up Johnsonbaugh. The wild throw by Edwards allowed Higgerson to trot home from third base, giving Radford a 2-1 lead.

Winthrop put together a two-out rally in the bottom half of the frame on back-to-back singles by Mark Lowrie and Roger Gonzalez. Ridgely dug deep, getting Mitch Spires ground out to first base.

Ridgely allowed only two Winthrop hits over the next innings, turning the ninth inning over the Highlander bullpen. The Eagles would load the bases, tying the game on a sac fly from Travis Asbill, forcing extras.

The Eagles would load the bases again in the bottom of the tenth. Austin Ross came out of the Highlander bullpen, ending the scoring threat with two strikeouts.

Coia's fourth hit of the evening kicked off the top of the 11th inning. Higgerson moved Coia to second on a sac bunt and Hrbek was intentionally walked, putting runners on first and second with one out. Radford was unable to push across the run, its best opportunity to score in extras.

The bottom of the 12th inning saw the Eagles load the bases for the third time in four innings. Winthrop would make good of the chance as a Hunter Lipscomb RBI single to center field, gave the Eagles a comeback 3-2 victory.

Radford and Winthrop will return to action tomorrow in a nationally televised contest on the American Sports Network. Acition is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
