ROCK HILL, S.C. – Radford was unable to recreate yesterday's late inning magic as the Highlanders dropped the Big South series finale 3-1 to Winthrop, Sunday afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark.

The Highlanders continued its early inning offensive success as Chris Coia led off the game with a double off the left field wall, just missing his first home run of the season. Coia moved over to third on Colby Higgerson's 11th sacrifice bunt on the season.

With Danny Hrbek at the plate and RBI opportunity in front of the junior, a passed ball by Roger Gonzalez allowed Coia to trot home as the Highlanders plated the first run of the game in four straight contests.

After working out of two early jams, Mitchell MacKeith found himself in another one in the bottom of the third. MacKeith hit Tyler Asbill to start the inning. Asbill moved to second on a sac bunt from Brandon Fite. With a runner standing at second and one out, Mark Lowrie hit a chopper to short as Higgerson misplayed the grounder, allowing Asbill to score on the RU error.

Looking for its first hit since the opening inning, Radford put together a two-out fourth inning rally with back-to-back hits from Trevor Riggs and Kyle Butler. The Highlander threat ended as Zach Duff flew out to center field.

The bottom of the fourth saw Winthrop take the lead as Jace Whitley launched a leadoff home run over the right field wall.

Winthrop built off the momentum gained from the home run as the Eagles put two runners on forcing Radford to dip into its bullpen, bringing in Travis McQueen. McQueen walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. Grant English picked up the RBI walk, extending the Eagle lead to 3-1. McQueen battled back, striking out Kyle Edwards to end the threat.

The Highlanders only managed two hits over the last four innings with its best chance to score coming on a two-out triple off the bat of Higgerson in the top of the eighth.

Radford will return to the diamond on Tuesday, traveling to Charlottesville to face the defending national champion Virginia Cavaliers. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Davenport Field.
