RADFORD’S STREAK SNAPPED BY 4-0 DEFEAT TO HOKIES

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team's best winning streak in five years was stopped at nine games Wednesday night as Virginia Tech posted a 4-0 non-conference victory at Radford Softball Stadium.

The Hokies totaled 13 hits in the game, but strong Radford defense helped keep them off the scoreboard in all but one inning. However, Tech (24-24) got six of the hits in the four-run fourth inning that was the difference.

Radford (29-16) suffered its first setback in two full weeks and was shut out for only the third time all season and first since Feb. 28. Becky Mantel recorded the lone hit against Hokies' ace Maggie Tyler to extend her streak of reaching base to 19 straight games.

Tyler, though, tossed her second shutout in as many days and ninth of the season. The ACC's strikeout leader had eight in the game.

Abby Morrow (17-11) lost for first time in seven appearances, allowing one run on seven hits in 3 1-3 innings. She did her best to keep the game scoreless until the fourth. The Hokies loaded the bases with one out, but Morrow got a popup back to her and doubled up the runner at the third base.

Tech started the third with back-to-back singles, but after a sacrifice, Marissa Gagliano threw home on a grounder to get the second out and another fielder's choice off a groundball ended that inning.

In the fourth, though, Chelsea Whitcomb led off with a double and another hard hit ball to right was caught on a great diving play by Summer Robinson. Kayla Huffman entered in relief, but the Hokies kept on hitting, getting three straight singles followed by a bases-clearing double from Katey Smith that made it 4-0.

Lauren McIntyre then came on for the Highlanders to start the fifth and held Tech to just one hit over the final three innings. Gagliano helped out with a spectacular diving stop on a groundball up the middle for the third out in the sixth.

Mantel's hit was a one-out single in the fourth inning. However, it was quickly followed by a groundout double play.

HIGHLANDERS HEADING TO KNOXVILLE
Radford was originally scheduled to be off this weekend, but has added a pair of games on Saturday as part of the Tennessee Classic. The Highlanders will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. and take on No. 9 ranked Oklahoma at 4:30 p.m., followed by a matchup against Lipscomb at 7 p.m.

Tennessee had a spot open up in its late-season tournament after Louisiana-Monroe dropped out. Assuming the remainder of its scheduled contests are played, the two additions will give Radford a full 56-game slate for the season.
