SOFTBALL DROPS BOTH GAMES AT TENNESSEE CLASSIC

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the first time all season, the Radford softball team suffered two losses on the same day as Lipscomb pulled out a 1-0 nine-inning decision Saturday night in the Tennessee Classic. Earlier in the day, the Highlanders fell to No. 9 ranked Oklahoma 9-0.

The defeat to Lipscomb was Radford's first in three extra-inning games this season, while the three-game losing streak matches the Highlanders' (29-18) longest of the campaign.

Abby Morrow and Lipscomb's Kelly Young combined to dominate the game, allowing a total of seven hits. However, the Bisons had five, including the walk-off RBI double to right-center by Abby Fenichel. Destinee Brewer fouled off several pitches with two strikes before drawing a leadoff walk and scoring the winning run.

Morrow went the distance and took the tough loss, striking out three and walking two. She faced the minimum through four innings before pitching out of a trouble in the seventh and eighth.

However, Young matched her inning for inning and allowed just two hits to the Highlanders. The Atlantic Sun Conference's leader in strikeouts tied a career-high with 15.

Radford had the first chance to score in the third as Hannah Medlam led off with a single and advanced to third on bunts by Alex Lang and Nia Chiles, but a strikeout ended the frame.

Lipscomb recorded singles in both the second and fourth, but both runners were erased, first on a caught stealing by Lang and then on a groundball double play by Marissa Gagliano. Morrow then pitched around an error in the fifth, stranding a runner at second with a strikeout and another grounder to Gagliano.

The Highlanders got a runner in scoring position with one out in the seventh as Becky Mantel walked and stole second. However, two Young strikeouts followed.

Morrow stranded the potential runners on second base in both the seventh and eighth, getting popout on a bunt in the former and recording a called third strike on the Bisons' leading hitter in the latter. Mantel singled with two outs in the ninth for the other Highlander hit, but a groundout kept RU off the scoreboard.

Oklahoma defeated Radford by the same score as it did No. 12 Tennessee earlier in the day. Morrow worked a perfect first inning, before the Sooners totaled seven runs in the second and third, using nine hits and three Radford errors. Oklahoma then capped the scoring in the fifth en route to an 12th straight win.

Gagliano singled to lead off the bottom of the first, while Kayla Bishton added the other RU hit. Morrow pitched three innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits.

Radford begins a key week of Big South Conference action with its final three home games of the season as it hosts rival Liberty. The teams, which are tied with five losses in league play, will meet for a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 4 p.m. and wrap the series on Wednesday afternoon.
