RADFORD, Va. – A constant downpour of rain on Friday, forced Radford and George Mason to play a twin bill on Saturday as the Patriots controlled the day, taking game one (2-0) and game two (9-3) in the in-state battle. The Highlanders received nine innings of only two runs allowed baseball from its bullpen in the double-dip.

GAME ONE

The first game of the doubleheader belonged to Tyler Zombro as the junior dominated Highlander batters with nine shutout innings. Zombro only allowed two hits, while striking out nine RU batters. The complete game marked the second consecutive for Zombro.

George Mason broke the scoreless contest in the top of the second as Trevor Kelly and Jonathan Hansen collected back-to-back singles. The two runners moved up on a passed ball and Kelly scored on a RBI groundout from Alejandro Aponte.

Radford looked to even the contest in the bottom half of the inning as Trevor Riggs led the frame off with a triple to right-center field. Following an Adam Whitacre strikeout, Jordan Taylor hit a groundball to third base as Riggs broke for the plate. The Patriot third baseman fired home, getting Riggs on the fielders' choice putout.

The second Patriot run came in the fourth inning on a Greg Popatak RBI single.

Zombro put together six 1-2-3 innings, before Shane Johnsonbaugh gave the Highlanders their first hit since the second inning with a single through the left side.

Ryan Sande tossed three scoreless one-hit innings out of the Radford bullpen.

Win: Tyler Zombro (1-7) (9.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K)
Loss: Zack Ridgely (2-4) (6.0 IP, 4 H, 2R/1ER, 1 BB, 3 K)

GAME TWO

George Mason struck first in the nightcap, plating two runs in the top of the first on a RU error and Kent Blackstone RBI groundout.

The Patriots extended their lead with a five-run third inning on five hits and two errors. Kelly highlighted the inning with a two-run single.

Following the seven-run inning, Miller Trevvett came out of the RU bullpen, tossing three two-hit frames in relief. Trevvett punched out three Patriot batters.

Leading 7-0, Patriot starter Joe Williams held RU batters hitless until the bottom of the fourth as Danny Hrbek led off the inning with a single.

Hrbek gave Radford its second hit with another single in the bottom of the sixth. George Mason pitchers held the Highlanders scoreless for the first 14 innings of the doubleheader until one swing of the bat from Riggs ended the streak. Riggs drilled a first pitch fastball over the left field wall, pulling RU within 7-2.

The Highlanders added another run in the seventh as Zach Duff led off the inning with a walk and Whitacre singled to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Johnsonbaugh lined a RBI single up the middle, cutting the deficit to 7-3.

George Mason added an insurance run in the eighth and one in the ninth as the Patriots secured the series win with a 9-3 game two victory.

Win: Joe Williams (2-5) (5.1 IP, 3 H, 2R/2ER, 4 BB, 5 K)
Loss: Mitchell MacKeith (3-3) (3.2 IP, 7 H, 7R/3ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

Radford will look to salvage the non-conference series tomorrow in a 2 p.m. contest.
