LONGWOOD HANDS SOFTBALL ITS FIRST CONFERENCE SWEEP

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Radford softball team was on the losing end of a Big South series sweep for the first time this season as first-place Longwood collected 9-3 and 5-1 victories Saturday afternoon.

The Highlanders dropped to 31-22 overall and 12-9 in the conference, while the Lancers extended their winning streak to 11 games and moved to 32-15 and 18-3 in league play.

Longwood used big innings to take control in each contest, breaking open a 3-2 game in the opener with a five-run third and scoring four in the first frame of the nightcap.

As it did in Friday's series opener, Radford took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of Saturday's first game, this time on two home runs instead of one. Hannah Medlam hit her first career homer and Kayla Bishton followed two batters later with her fifth of the season and third this week.

However, the top of Longwood's order continued to do damage in the bottom of the frame. A pair of bunt hits started it all and Emily Murphy plated one run with a double. A two-run single by Kaylynn Batten just past second baseman Nia Chiles put the Lancers ahead 3-2.

All five runs in the third were scored after starter Lauren McIntyre had recorded two outs. A single was followed by a two-run homer. Another single and an RU defensive miscue put two more runners on and a pair of doubles – the second one coming off of reliever Kayla Huffman – around an intentional walk to Murphy accounted for three runs. Murphy then added a two-out homer in the fifth inning to make it 9-2.

The Highlanders capped the scoring in the sixth as Marissa Gagliano singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Bishton, as she collected her eighth RBI of the week.

McIntyre suffered her first career loss, while Longwood starter Sydney Gay got her second victory of the series.

In the second game, Radford stranded the bases loaded in the first and the Lancers used three hits and a pair of walks to take the 4-0 lead.

Radford tallied its lone run in the top of the second as Gagliano recorded her second hit of the contest, an RBI single up the middle that scored Alex Lang, who had walked and moved to second on a wild pitch. Longwood made it 5-1 in the third, using a hit batter, seeing-eye single through the right side and a sacrifice fly.

Abby Morrow shut the Lancer offense down after that, finishing strong despite the loss. She allowed five hits, but just two after the first inning and retired nine of the last 10 batters. Elizabeth McCarthy got the complete-game win while striking out 12.

Radford will close out the regular season with a series at Campbell next Friday and Saturday.
