LYNCHBURG, Va. – Looking at a 10-run deficit after six innings, Radford scored eight late inning runs as the Highlanders attempted to salvage their final road game of the Big South regular season, eventually falling 14-8 to Commonwealth foe Liberty in a contest that saw 22 runs on 22 hits.

After two scoreless frames, Liberty broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third. The Flames loaded the bases, scoring their first three runs on walk and two hit by pitches.

The 3-0 lead soon ballooned as Eric Grabowski launched a first pitch fastball from Tyler Swarmer over the left field wall for his first career grand slam.

Making his second start of the season, Jordan Scott was perfect for 3.1 innings before Colby Higgerson broke up the perfect game bid with a single up the middle. Higgerson was stranded following fly outs by Danny Hrbek and Shane Johnsonbaugh.

Swarmer regrouped, retiring the Flames in order in the fourth and fifth innings, holding the 7-0 deficit standstill.

Liberty greeted new RU pitcher Mack Krupp in the sixth inning with three runs on four hits to extend their lead to 10-0. The inning saw a pair of RBI doubles from Andrew Yacyk and Grabowski.

Radford was held scoreless by Scott for the first six innings, before the Highlander bats came alive in the seventh inning. Higgerson kicked off the inning, lining a double down the right field line for the second RU hit of the contest. Hrbek followed with a double of his own into the right-center field gap, plating Higgerson for the first Highlander run.

Following a Johnsonbaugh walk, Jonathan Gonzalez collected the third double of the inning, scoring Hrbek easily. The Highlanders proceeded to load the bases on walks by Nygeal Andrews and Jordan Taylor.

The Highlanders received another run as Matt Roth grounded into a double play. With four runs already crossing the plate in the inning, Chandler Davis continued his strong offensive series with a pinch hit single into right field. Davis' fifth RBI in the three-game series cut the RU deficit to 10-5. The five runs came on five hits, including three doubles.

Liberty answered the five-run Radford inning with four runs of their own. The inning saw a two-run ground-rule double off the bat of Grabowski as the Flames took a commanding 14-5 lead.

Radford did not go away easily in the ninth inning as Andrews led off the frame with a single through the left side and Zach Duff followed with a double off the right field wall, putting Highlanders in scoring position.

Anthony Miano collected his first career RBI on a ground out, scoring Andrews and advancing Duff to third. Chris Coia followed with an opposite field single, plating Duff to cut the Flames' lead to 14-7.

Higgerson kept the two-out rally going with a single through the right side to put runners on the corners. Hrbek added the eighth Radford run on an infield RBI single as the Highlanders were unable to avoid the sweep, falling 14-8 in a late inning rally.

Radford and Liberty will meet in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at the RU Baseball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
