SOFTBALL DROPS TWO ON FINAL DAY OF REGULAR SEASON

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Radford softball team dropped 3-0 and 4-2 decisions at Campbell Saturday afternoon as it closed out its regular-season schedule.

The Highlanders finished at 32-24 overall and 13-11 in Big South play, while Campbell improved to 25-29 overall and 11-13 in the conference. Radford will be the fourth seed in next week's tournament, while either Campbell or Presbyterian will be the fifth seed. Pairings will be officially announced following play on Sunday.

Radford trailed 4-0 in the second game before trying to rally in the seventh inning. After stranding a pair of runners in both the fifth and sixth innings, the Highlanders finally broke through on a two-run single to right field by Hannah Medlam. An error, a walk and a pinch-hit single by Haley Hutchins loaded the bases before Medlam got one past the diving second baseman to cut the deficit in half. She advanced to second on the throw home, putting the tying run in scoring position. However, Katie Baker, the starter of Saturday's opener, came on in relief to get a game-ending strikeout.

Campbell took a 1-0 lead in the game as a fielding error extended the second inning and it capitalized with a pair of singles. A passed ball in between two more singles and a sacrifice led to another unearned run in the third and a 2-0 edge. The Fighting Camels then added two runs on three hits, including Rachel McCullom's second home run of the day – and 14th of the season - in the fifth inning.

Abby Morrow allowed two earned runs over five innings and suffered the loss. Courtney Roberts got the victory, allowing three hits over 6 2-3 innings. Whitney Davis had the other hit for the Highlanders, a single in the fifth inning.

In the opener, Campbell scored single runs in the first, second and sixth innings, while Baker recorded the complete-game shutout, allowing three hits.

McCollum's first homer got the Fighting Camels on the board as she prevailed in a battle with Kayla Huffman, hitting the 14th pitch of her at-bat over the left-field fence. A dropped foul ball helped make it 2-0 in the second.  Amber Schisler capitalized on the second chance with a base hit, and another single was followed by a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly then plated the run. The final run came on three hits – one blooper and two that went off the gloves of Highlander fielders.

Each of Radford's three hits were singles – two for Summer Robinson and one by Medlam, but its best chance to score came in the top of the sixth. Becky Mantel reached on a two-out fielding error and Kayla Bishton walked, but Baker followed with one of her six strikeouts.

Huffman took the loss, allowing one earned run on three hits in two innings. Lauren McIntyre worked four innings in relief, giving up a run on five hits.
