RADFORD, Va. – Six days after its first practice for the 2016 season, Radford's women's soccer team took on an opponent and played to a 0-0 draw with George Mason in exhibition action Wednesday night at Cupp Stadium.
In a match broken down into three 30-minute periods, Radford controlled the majority of the play and finished with a 9-8 advantage in shots. The Highlanders had two shots on goal and hit the post with another, while George Mason put three attempts on net and had one go off the crossbar.
Radford had the better opportunities, particularly in the opening 60 minutes. Early in the first, a good combination set up Jane Everett for a shot, but the ball deflected off the oncoming Mason goalkeeper and went wide. Shortly after, a foul just outside the penalty area set up a free kick by Jordan Lundin and her attempt beat the Patriots keeper, but caromed off the left post.
In the second period, the Highlanders played a nice mid-air volley off a cross from the right wing. However, the Mason keeper was able to leap and tip the ball over the bar.
Freshman Courtenay Kaplan played the first two periods in goal and made three saves for Highlanders. A total of six RU newcomers started the match and three others saw action.
Radford plays its second and final exhibition match Saturday as it travels to Davidson.
