Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

RADFORD FALLS TO ETSU ON FIRST-HALF GOAL

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Radford women's soccer team was able to complete its first game of the season, but dropped a 1-0 decision on the road at East Tennessee State Tuesday night.

ETSU (2-0) tallied the game's lone goal in the 17th minute and held on for its second straight 1-0 victory. The goal came off of a rebound following a corner kick. Radford freshman goalkeeper Courtenay Kaplan was able to leap and get a hand on a header attempt, but the ball hit off the crossbar and ETSU's Simona Koren volleyed the ball back into the open net.

The teams combined for just five shots in the opening half and 15 for the game, with the Buccaneers holding a 10-5 edge. Both teams put three attempts on goal.

Four of the Highlanders' five shots came in the second half. Sophomore Jasmine Casarez recorded a game-high three shots and put all three on net, including two during the latter part of the match. Senior Miranda Carlson also had a chance early in the second half, but her attempt off a cross went wide.

Kaplan played all 90 minutes in goal in her first collegiate start and recorded two saves.

"ETSU is a very experienced and tactically talented team," RU head coach Ben Sohrabi said. "We also had a great gameplan and it was a close match. We did some good things and just have to be more consistent."

Radford will now prepare for its home opener on Sunday against Appalachian State. Kickoff at Cupp Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
