RADFORD OPENS 2017 SEASON WITH 4-1 WIN OVER SOUTH CAROLINA ST.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Radford kicked off their 2017 season with a 4-1 win over South Carolina State as two freshmen picked up their first collegiate wins in a Highlander uniform, Friday afternoon.

"What a great win to start the year. South Carolina State is a well-coached, conference champion that gave us a good match that could have gone either way," said head coach Mike Anderson. "The high point of today's match for us was that two of our three freshmen collected their first collegiate wins in their first match as NCAA Division I student-athletes."

The Highlanders collected the doubles point in demanding fashion as Matko Varga and Alexandros Caldwell made quick work of the tandem of Vladyslav Yanchenko/Soufiane Mouline by the score of 6-1.

Samuel Taylor and Janken Thoen secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Edgar Diaz and Aleksander Stupar.

Spring semester enrollees Rodrigo Magalhaes and Varga put the Highlanders up 3-0 with two singles wins. Rosales de Magalhaes defeated Yanchenko (7-5, 7-5), while his freshmen counterpart Varga collected a 6-4, 6-2 win over Martin Figura.

Soufiane Mouline gave the Bulldogs their lone win on the day with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Calais.

Taylor sealed the Radford 4-1 victory with a 7-5, 6-3 win in No. 6 singles.
