HIGHLANDERS DROP FIRST MATCH OF SEASON TO USC UPSTATE

CONWAY, S.C. – Radford men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2017 season with a 6-1 neutral site decision against USC Upstate at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Center, Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans captured the doubles point with two 6-1 match wins. USC Upstate collected all singles matches except No. 3 singles as freshman Robin Calais collected his first collegiate win with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Lenhard Haupt.

In No. 4 singles, Alexandros Caldwell put up a fight, before dropping a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (10-5) decision to Francisco Neto.

"Today was a tough loss to a good USC Upstate team. We had our chance in doubles and with a couple favorable bounces, it may have been different in singles," said head coach Mike Anderson. "[Robin] Calais got his first college win and the overall team effort was great. Tomorrow we get a chance at last year's Big South champion."

Radford returns to action on Sunday against former Big South foe Coastal Carolina in a 11 a.m. match.
