CLINTON, S.C. – Radford dropped its second Big South contest on the season after Presbyterian outscored the Highlanders 23-14 in the fourth quarter for a 58-54 wire-to-wire victory in a contest that saw Radford lead for 34:31 and shoot 50 percent from the field, Tuesday night inside the Templeton Center.

The Highlanders received 38 of their 54 points from the duo of Destinee Walker and Jayda Worthy. Walker matched a career-high 22 points with a career-best 10 made field goals in 15 attempts, including two baskets from behind the arc. Worthy finished with 16 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the floor, including a 6 for 10 performance from the free throw line.

Radford raced out to a commanding 18-3 lead in the opening quarter as the Highlander duo scored 13 of the points. Worthy added seven points on 2 for 2 shooting, while Walker contributed six points on 3 of 3 from the field. During the opening run, Radford made seven of its first nine shots.

Presbyterian closed out the opening quarter on a 10-2 run and continued the run into the second 10 minutes. The second quarter saw both teams struggle shooting from the field. Radford scored the first three points of the quarter and proceeded to be held scoreless for the next 7:17 of the half.

Sydney Nunley forced a steal with under 10 seconds remaining till halftime. Khiana Johnson pushed the ball up the floor, finding Nunley for a layup to beat the buzzer and end Radford's cold streak.

Radford headed into the locker room with a 25-21 lead, but Presbyterian closed out the first half on a 18-7 run after finding themselves down 15 early in the game.

Walker and Worthy paced all scorers with eight points apiece in the quarter as 18 of Radford's 25 points came in the paint.

The teams traded baskets to start the third quarter, before a Janie Miles' 3-pointer and Cortney Storey fast break layup cut the Highlander lead to one point (29-28) three minutes into the second half.

Radford answered back with 6-0 run on a Nunley layup and two Walker jumpers, pushing the lead to 35-28 with 4:45 remaining in the quarter.

Once again the two teams went cold from the field, holding one another scoreless for almost three minutes in the quarter. Storey ended the streak with a jumper with just under 16 seconds remaining, while Walker knocked down a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer and send Radford into the final quarter with a 45-40 lead.

Presbyterian went on a 9-4 run in the fourth quarter as a Taylor Petty 3-pointer at the 5:20 mark tied the game at 44 each, marking the first tie of the contest. Following a Janayla White free throw, Salina Virola handed Presbyterian its first lead on a three-point play with 4:33 remaining. Virola added another basket off a Miles steal and Storey assist as the Blue Hose commanded a 49-45 lead.

Radford's next basket would not come until the 3:10 mark on a Worthy layup, cutting the deficit to 50-47. The Blue Hose would build the lead back up, this time a six-point advantage with just under two minutes left to play.

Walker put the Highlanders on her back, knocking down a mid-range jumper at the 1:50 mark and a 3-pointer at the top of the key to pull Radford within 53-52 with 1:10 remaining in regulation.

Walker and Johnson missed two attempts each down the stretch in what turned into a free throw contest. The Blue Hose made 5 of 6 from the charity stripe for the 58-54 upset victory.

QUOTABLE
  • "I thought Presbyterian was the more disciplined and tougher team in the second half. Teams can't come down here and turn the ball over 23 times expecting to win. I think a lot of our issues tonight were fundamentals and decision making. We had our best start to a game this season, but got too careless offensively in the second half to beat a team that is going to play disciplined the whole game." ~ Radford head coach Mike McGuire
