RADFORD EARNS 1-0 WIN AT CSU, CLINCHES POSTSEASON BERTH

MATCH INFORMATION
  • Score: Radford 1, Charleston Southern 0
  • Records: Radford 11-6-0 (4-5-0 BSC) | CSU 5-10-2 (3-5-1 BSC)
  • Location: CSU Soccer Field | Charleston, S.C.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A 41st minute goal by freshman defender Jada Ellis and nine saves by freshman goalkeeper Lexi Dean proved to be the difference as Radford women's soccer tops Charleston Southern, 1-0, to secure its third consecutive win and a spot in the Big South Championships.

With the Highlanders charging down the pitch, the Buccaneers were whistled for a foul to grant Radford a free kick. It was Ellis that stepped up to take that kick and her long ball into the box made its way past everyone and into the top, right corner of the goal. Playing primarily along the back line, it was the first goal of Ellis' career and only her fourth shot attempt.

One goal was all it took for Radford to improve to 11-6-0 overall and 4-5-0 in the Big South while CSU fell to 5-10-2 and 3-5-1 in conference play.

The Buccaneers came out firing so it was crucial that Dean was ready from the first minute and ready she was. The Fairfax Station, Va. product made her first four saves on Charleston Southern's first five shots, all of which came in the first 18 minutes of action. She would go on to match her season and career high of nine saves for the third time, including a nine-save effort against UNC Asheville just this past Wednesday.

Give credit to the entire Radford defense, comprised of Ellis, sophomore Emily Dunn, junior Jane Everett, freshman Alex Struder and several others who made an impact off the bench. The unit earned its fourth shutout of the season and second in the last three games.

If you glanced at the stat sheet you probably wouldn't be able to guess the final score with CSU owning a 21-to-9 advantage in shot attempts and a 9-to-3 ratio in shots on goal.

Five different Buccaneers recorded three shots on the day while junior forward Jessica Wollmann paced the Highlanders' attack with three shots of her own.

The effort puts Radford in the Big South Championships for the second year in a row after missing the cut in 2015.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • With her goal, Ellis becomes the 10th goal scorer for the Highlanders this season. The others include Casarez (11), Wollmann (7), Perez (5), Paupst (5), Everett (3), Ziegler (1), McLane (1), Dundon (1) and Dunn (1)
  • Juniors Jasmine Casarez and Claire Dundon were the only other Highlanders to record multiple shots on the day
  • Senior forwards McKensey Ziegler and Cassidy Ratliff made solid contributions off the bench in the final regular season game of their careers
  • With Head Coach Ben Sohrabi utilizing his bench to keep legs fresh, only Everett and Dean played the full 90 minutes
  • It was a relatively quiet game on the foul front as both teams were only called for five each
  • With a recent move up the pitch from outside back to midfielder, sophomore Natacha Rangel-Ribiero got off her second shot attempt of the season with the last coming on Sept. 23rd

QUOTABLE
"I'm proud of the resilience of our team down the stretch. To have only one goal scored against us in the last three games shows the defensive mindset we want to have. Today was a scrappy win against a physical, hard working team and I thought we played with a lot of heart on the road." - Head Coach Ben Sohrabi
