WALKER PACES RADFORD IN 79-46 LOSS AT UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Destinee Walker paced Radford with a team-high 12 points in a 79-46 loss to North Carolina as the Highlanders were unable to overcome a hot Thursday night shooting performance by the Tar Heels.

North Carolina (2-1) finished the first half 13 for 26 from the floor and shot 58.3 percent from the field in the second half. The Tar Heels forced 22 Highlander turnovers, turning them into 25 points. Radford (1-1) created 19 turnovers, only managing 13 points off the Tar Heel miscues.

Walker finished the game as the only Highlander in double-digits as Radford placed four in double-figures during its season opener versus Appalachian State. The junior finished 5 for 15 from the floor, dishing out two assists. Khiana Johnson followed with nine points off the bench.

The Tar Heels' hot shooting effort started as they made 9 of their final 12 shots of the opening quarter, however they were held to only four field goals in the second quarter as Radford's defense bared down.

Following a Walker 3-pointer to give Radford an early 5-4 lead, North Carolina went on a 15-4 run to build a 10-point lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Radford was held scoreless for the final 4:26 of the first quarter, which continued into the second quarter for a span of 11:58 as Johnson ended the streak with a mid-range jumper off an Alexis Jackson pass from just beyond half court.

The Johnson jumper sparked a 6-0 swing by the Highlanders, which pulled the Highlanders within 27-15 with just under two minutes remaining in the opening half. Johnson led the team with seven first-half points.

Called for two quick fouls in the third quarter, Jayda Worthy went to the bench with four fouls. The result of the two fouls sparked a Radford 6-1 run as Jen Falconer forced two turnovers, leading to two free throws of her own and a Walker layup, inching within 41-27 five minutes into the second half.

Following a North Carolina free throw, Walker drained a jumper and Laney Corbin made two free throws to cut the deficit to 11 (42-31) with 3:48 remaining in the third quarter. Eleven points would be as close as the Highlanders would get within the Tar Heels in the second half.

North Carolina was held without a field goal by the Radford defense for a four-minute span in the quarter, but ended on an 10-1 run, forcing three Radford turnovers to push its lead to 52-32.

The fourth quarter saw the Tar Heels put up 27 points, making nine of their final 11 shots, while holding Radford to a 3 for 17 clip as the Highlanders were unable to chip into the deficit.
