RADFORD NOTCHES 6-3 SEASON-OPENING VICTORY

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Radford softball team started off its 2017 campaign in successful fashion with a 6-3 win over IUPUI Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Chattanooga Challenge.

Making her return to game action after missing the 2016 season, junior Maggie Rowe went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead the Highlander offense, which totaled five doubles and 12 hits, including at least one from each batter in the lineup. Freshman Hunter Mundy had hits in her first two collegiate at-bats, going 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.

Abby Morrow notched the complete-game victory, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking four without a walk. The senior right-hander didn't allow an earned run after the second inning.

Radford's offense was the story early though, as it struck in its first turn at bat for the season. Freshman Sofia Tapia drew a one-out walk and stole second before Mundy followed with a single through the left side. Two batters later, Rowe delivered a two-out, two-run double to center.

IUPUI made it a 2-1 score in the bottom of the first on two singles around a stolen base and a groundout and tied the game in the bottom of the second on a leadoff double, single and groundball double play.

However, Radford quickly regained the lead for good in the third as Mundy led off with a double down the right-field line and scored on Rowe's second run-scoring double of the game.

The Highlanders then made it 5-2 in the fourth as Kayla Bishton collected the team's fourth two-bagger, plating two runs. The inning was set up when Callie Morgan was hit by a pitch and Marissa Gagliano reached on an infield single. The runners moved up a base on a flyout by Mundy before Bishton dropped one into left-center.

Radford capped its scoring in the sixth on the final double of the game. Tapia recorded her first collegiate hit with a leadoff single and moved to second on a groundout. After Bishton drew a walk, Rowe singled to center. Tapia was called out at the plate on the play, but Summer Robinson followed with a two-out double to center, plating Bishton. Five of the Highlanders' six runs came on two-out hits.

Radford also picked up where it left off last season, when it recorded a Big South-leading 77 doubles, fifth-most in program history.

Morrow took it from there, finding her groove in the middle innings and retiring 11 straight IUPUI batters - including seven groundouts, two strikeouts and a popout – before a one-out single in the sixth. Five of the Jaguars' six hits in the game were singles.

In its second game of the day, Radford fell to host Chattanooga, 10-3. The Highlanders again took the early lead with two runs in the first inning and one in the second, but Chattanooga went ahead with five runs in the third, before adding one in the fourth and four more in the fifth. Three homers accounted for seven of the runs.

Mundy had an RBI single for Radford's first run, while Gagliano tallied two hits in the game. Making her first appearance in the circle since the end of the 2015 season, junior Tiffany Brown started and pitched three innings, allowing six hits, striking out one and walking two.

The Highlanders continue play in the tournament Saturday, taking on Kennesaw State at 11 a.m. and Tennessee Tech at 1:30 p.m.
