SOFTBALL PICKS UP WINS OVER UCONN, TENNESSEE TECH

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – It was an interesting Saturday at the Chattanooga Challenge for the Radford softball team as rain forced several changes to the schedule. However, when the Highlanders finally got on the field, they were successful, notching an 8-3 victory over Connecticut followed by a 6-5 win over Tennessee Tech.

Freshman Sofia Tapia and Hunter Mundy starred offensively in the UConn game, with Tapia making her first collegiate homer a three-run shot and Mundy driving in two runs. Maggie Rowe, meanwhile continued her hot start, going 5 for 6 at the plate during the day, including a 3 for 3 performance with a home run and two RBIs game against Tennessee Tech.

In the circle, Abby Morrow notched her second straight win in first game, while freshman Mallory Marsicek claimed her first career victory with a complete game in the nightcap.

Radford 8, UConn 3
After UConn took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Highlanders scored eight straight runs, taking the lead with three in the third, tallying four in the fifth and adding one more in the sixth.

Tapia hit her go-ahead homer with two outs in the third after Marissa Gagliano kept the inning alive by drawing a walk. The homer also scored Marsicek, who had reached on an error.

All four runs in the fifth also came with two outs, as Gagliano singled, Tapia walked and Mundy hit a two-run double to left field. Kayla Bishton then reached on a catcher's interference, Rowe singled and Summer Robinson followed with an RBI single, with Mundy also coming home ahead of a putout at third.

Brittany Wratchford then capped the scoring with her first RBI of the season, doubling down the left-field line to plate Marsicek, who had just singled for her first collegiate hit. Eight different Highlanders combined for nine hits in the game, while Gagliano added two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Morrow went the distance, allowing just one run on six hits over the first six innings before UConn struck in the seventh. She struck out five and walked one.

Radford 6, Tennessee Tech 5
Radford totaled eight hits and jumped out to a 6-0 lead with single runs in the second and third and two each in the fourth and fifth. Along with Rowe's performance, Tapia went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Rowe got the Highlanders on the board by homering over the fence in center for her first of the season and seventh of her career. Tapia then made it 2-0 with a two-out RBI single in the third, scoring freshman Lauren Maddrey, who had reached on a bunt single.

In the fourth, Kayla Bishton led off with a double and scored on Rowe's run-scoring single up the middle. Marsicek followed later in the inning with her first career RBI on a double to right.

Radford capped its scoring and provided just enough insurance with the two runs in the fifth. Gagliano was hit by a pitch and stole second, her fourth of the season. Tapia followed with a single and another steal, with Gagliano moving to third before coming home on a passed ball. Mundy then followed with an RBI groundout.

Making her first collegiate start, Marsicek pitched five scoreless innings with just three hits allowed before Tennessee Tech got on the board in sixth. The Golden Eagles then cut the lead to one on a grand slam with two outs in the seventh, but Marsicek came back to get a game-ending groundout. For the game, Marsicek allowed six hits and struck out four.

Radford has a quick turnaround for its final game of the tournament taking on Kennesaw State Sunday at 9 a.m.
