SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT KENNESAW STATE

KENNESAW, Ga. – The Radford softball team began its weekend trip to Georgia by splitting a doubleheader at Kennesaw State Friday afternoon, taking the first game 10-6 before dropping an 11-3 six-inning decision in the nightcap.

The Highlanders (4-3) had the bats working in the opener, totaling three home runs and 13 hits with five different players each contributing at least two. Hunter Mundy and Maggie Rowe each went 3 for 5 with a homer, with Mundy totaling two RBIs and two runs scored. Kayla Bishton and Hannah Medlam each had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, with Bishton adding the other home run. Brittany Wratchford also had two hits and drove in one run.

Abby Morrow recorded the victory in relief, allowing two earned runs on three hits in four innings. Mallory Marsicek worked the first three innings, giving up three runs on five hits.

Kennesaw took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Courtney Sutter. However, Radford struck for five runs on five hits in the top of the third. Sofia Tapia drew a one-out walk and Mundy singled. After a foulout, the Highlanders rattled off four straight two-out, run-scoring hits. Summer Robinson and Bishton each had RBI singles to tie the game, before Medlam put Radford in front 4-2 with a two-run single. Wratchford capped it off with an RBI double.

Sutter homered in the bottom of the inning for the Owls, but Rowe answered with her third of the season over the fence in center with two outs in the fourth to make it 6-3.

The Highlanders then added two more in the fifth, beginning with Bishton's leadoff homer to left field. Medlam then singled and eventually scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Marissa Gagliano. Mundy then capped Radford's scoring in the top of the seventh with her first collegiate homer, a two-run blast to left after Gagliano had walked.

Morrow meanwhile had allowed just one hit in her first three innings after entering to start the fourth before Kennesaw tried to make things interesting in the seventh. The Owls took advantage of a pair of walks with a pair of singles to score two runs, but Morrow followed with a pair of groundouts to end it.

In the second game, Kennesaw (8-3) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a leadoff walk, stolen base and single. The Owls then struck for six runs in the second inning, using four hits and an error. Sutter capped it off with a grand slam, her fourth homer in the team's last three games.

Radford was held without a hit until the top of the fifth when Hannah Medlam led off with a double down the right field line. She then scored on Gagliano's RBI single up the middle with two outs.

The Highlanders then scored twice more in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Bishton and sacrifice fly by Medlam. However, Kennesaw finished with a game with a second grand slam in the bottom of the inning.

Morrow (3-2) started the game and suffered the loss, surrendering six hits in two innings. Abigail Green earned the win for Kennesaw, cooling off the Highlander bats to just four hits and striking out 10.

The Highlanders will now make the short drive to Atlanta for a Saturday doubleheader against Georgia Tech, with the opener scheduled for 1 p.m.
