RADFORD SPLITS WITH NKU; RESUMES PLAY ON SUNDAY

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team committed seven errors and suffered a 10-5 loss in the first game to Northern Kentucky; but avenged the loss with a 10-5 victory, led by Zack Ridgely on the mound, in the second game of the day at Radford Baseball Stadium.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, Saturday's game will be cancelled and play will resume with a series finale on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

GAME ONE

The Highlanders got off to a great start with Danny Hrbek getting a 1-2-3 top of the first inning and scoring a run in the bottom half to go ahead 1-0. Hrbek scored as Spencer Horwitz hit a two-out single through the left side.

Northern Kentucky took the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth with a couple of sacrifices by Chad Roberts and Kyle Colletta. Radford answered and tied the game at two with a Richard De la Cruz double to left center.

Two Highlander errors combined with four Norse hits gave Northern Kentucky a 5-2 lead through four and a half. Yet again Radford tied the game with a De la Cruz single, his second RBI of the game, a sacrifice bunt by Adam Whitacre and a two-out error.

Mike Moffatt plated the go-ahead run for the Norse with an infield single to second base in the seventh inning as Trey Ganns scored. Northern Kentucky earned a little more insurance with a four-run top of the eighth to go up 10-5.

Win: Trey Ganns (1-2)
Loss: Colin Reid (0-1)

GAME TWO

Zack Ridgely gave the Highlanders a great outing pitching 5.0 innings and only allowing two runs – one earned – on seven hits. The junior picked up his first win of the season and garnered six strikeouts, just three shy of his career-high.

He got a heavy dose of offensive firepower in the first inning as five runs crossed the plate for Radford with a little help from Northern Kentucky, who committed two errors in the inning. Hrbek tied the game at one with a double down the right field line and scored Whitacre, who reached with a lead off single.

A throwing error by the Norse catcher, a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly by Anthony Miano and a two-out RBI single by Chandler Davis gave the Highlanders a four run lead through the first inning.

Miano picked up his second RBI of the game with a single to left field as Kyle Butler, who reached on a double, scored and made it a 6-1 game. Butler went 2-for-3 in the game and scored three runs.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning and the Norse scored three in the top of the sixth, which made it a 7-5 game. The Highlanders put the game out of reach as Butler scored Gonzalez with an infield single and made it an 8-5 lead. Northern Kentucky allowed two runs to score on two errors in one play, before the inning ended on a strikeout.

Kyle Zurak picked up his second save of the game after he entered with the bases loaded and a four-run lead in the sixth. He ended the game with 1.1 innings pitched, one strikeout and no runs scored on two hits.

Win: Zack Ridgely (1-3)
Loss: Pat Kelley (0-1)
