RADFORD, Va. – Danny Hrbek and Spencer Horwitz combined for five of the 11 hits for the Highlanders as they won the decisive game three, 7-3, over Northern Kentucky and earned their first series win of this season on Sunday afternoon at Radford Baseball Stadium.

Led by the two through four hitters in the lineup, who had eight hits in the game, Radford (5-11) scored seven runs on 11 hits. The scoring began in the third inning after Northern Kentucky (3-10) took an early 1-0 lead in the top half.

The delayed steal worked to perfection with runners on the corners as Adam Whitacre scored on the throw after Hrbek stole second base and tied the game at one. Following a Jonathan Gonzalez single, Horwitz delivered a two-run double to left center field, which gave the Highlanders a 3-1 lead. The final run of the inning scored on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Butler.

The Highlanders took a 6-1 lead as the small ball game plated two in the fifth. Matt Roth delivered a hit and run single through the right side that scored Hrbek. Butler, the next batter, plated Horwitz with a sacrifice bunt.

In the seventh, Hrbek plated his lone run of the day with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Norse scored two runs before the end of the game. The first came in the seventh as the Highlanders traded two for one – two outs for one run – as a run scored on a Jake Richmond double play. The final run of the game scored on a throwing error by Hrbek in the ninth inning.

Five pitchers were used in the game for Radford with three of them being freshman. One freshman in Austin Gerber (1-1) picked up the win, the first of his collegiate career. He pitched 3.2 innings, allowed one run on five hits, walked none and struck out two. Dionne JeanFrancois (0-1) suffered the loss for the Norse in his first outing of the season.

QUOTABLE
"I really think that offensively we were really good today especially with our execution, hit and runs, safety squeeze, sac flies with guys on third and moving guys up with good approaches. I thought we gave a bunch of quality at bats and that's how you put up big numbers. Everything clicked today; I loved the way we played and the energy we played with." ~ Radford head baseball coach, Joe Raccuia.
