RADFORD DROPS DOUBLEHEADER AT MOREHEAD STATE

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Radford softball team fell in a doubleheader at Morehead State Friday afternoon, dropping the opener 4-2 before a late rally in the second game came up short, 4-3.

Marissa Gagliano went 4 for 6 with two runs and two stolen bases in the two games, while Brittany Wratchford hit a two-run homer in the second contest. Hunter Mundy had two RBIs and Kayla Bishton drove in one run.

Abby Morrow recorded two strikeouts in the second game, giving her 301 for her career. She is the fifth pitcher in program history to reach the 300 total.

Morehead State (11-7) scored six of their combined eight runs on three home runs, including all four runs in the first game. IN the second inning, Ellen Barrett followed a pair of singles with a three-run homer to left-center.

The Highlanders came back with two runs in the top of the third on three straight two-out hits. Gagliano dropped a blooper into shallow left field, followed with her 13th stolen base and moved to third on a fielding error by the third baseman off the bat of Sofia Tapia, who then moved into scoring position with her 11th steal. Mundy then lined a two-run single back up the middle.

Robyn Leighton made it 4-2 with a leadoff homer to start the fourth inning and Radford was unable to do any more damage against Morehead starter Chelsea McManaway, who finished the game with 12 strikeouts and notched her sixth win of the season.

Morrow (8-4) suffered her in first loss in four starts, allowing the four runs on five hits in four innings. She didn't walk a batter for the fifth straight game. Kayla Huffman worked two perfect innings in relief, striking out three.

In the second inning, each team missed opportunities in their first two turns at bat, leaving a combined four runners in scoring position, before Morehead again took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. After drawing a one-out walk, the Eagle runner went from first to third on a sacrifice and scored the first run on a single to right field. Leighton followed with her a two-run homer, giving her eight on the season.

Radford tried to answer in the top of the fourth as Kayla Bishton hit a one-out single. After a fielder's choice, Maggie Rowe doubled over the left-fielder, but Summer Robinson was called out at the plate, trying to score from first on the play. Morehead then made it 4-0 in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff single, stolen base, sacrifice and a wild pitch.

The Highlanders got on the board in the sixth as Gagliano reached on an error, moved to third on two groundouts and scored on Bishton's RBI single to center. In the seventh, Hannah Medlam reached on a hit by pitch with one out and Wratchford drilled her third homer of the season over the centerfield fence. However, after a Morehead pitching change, a foulout and strikeout ended the comeback bid.

Huffman and Morrow combined to limit Morehead to five hits. Huffman took the loss, allowing four in four innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Morrow had two strikeouts and walked one in relief, ending her streak at 34 1-3 innings. Gagliano and Bishton each had two of Radford's seven hits.

The finale of the three-game series scheduled for Saturday was cancelled due to the forecast for inclement weather. The Highlanders (9-8) are scheduled to play doubleheaders on Tuesday and Wednesday, first traveling to East Tennessee State, before hosting NC Central.
