RADFORD, Va. – Radford completed its first sweep of the 2017 season, scoring 32 runs on 43 hits in the three-game series, capping off the sweep with a 11-5 routing of Rider on Sunday afternoon. The sweep extended the Highlanders' winning streak to five straight.

The non-conference home sweep is the first by the Highlanders since May 1-2, 2015 versus James Madison. In the sweeping win, Radford's offense pumped out 17 hits with 12 coming in the sixth and seventh innings. In those two innings, Radford tallied nine of its 11 runs, scoring a season-high six runs in the sixth inning.

All nine Highlanders collected a hit, including five with multiple hit games. Of Radford's 17 hits, 15 came as singles. Spencer Horwitz put together a career day, going 4 for 4 at the dish with a game-high four RBIs. Danny Hrbek followed with a three-hit performance.

Radford fell behind early as Rider opened the game with a two-run home run off the bat of Riley Mihalik in the bottom of the first and extended the lead to 4-0 on a two-run double from Dalton Mayberry in the second.

Trailing 4-0, Radford cut the deficit in half in the third as Kyle Butler walked and Hrbek singled to left field, putting two Highlanders on with one out. Horwitz's second hit on the day came with his first two RBIs.

Following a short outing by Radford starter Ryan Sande, Mack Krupp held the Broncs scoreless in 2.1 innings of relief. Rider added its final run in the fifth inning off newly entered Cameron Fritz. On back-to-back doubles, Mike Volaski doubled in Mihalik to extended the lead to 5-2.

Unable to push across a run in the fifth with runners on the corners, Radford exploded for six runs on eight hits in the sixth inning, setting season highs in both categories.

Matt Roth and Anthony Miano led the inning off with a pair of singles, while Chandler Davis tied the game with a bang. Davis launched his first collegiate home run over the left field wall to knot the game at five on the three-run long ball

The Highlanders proceeded to collect five more singles in the inning. Radford added three more runs in the frame off base hits by Adam Whitacre, Jonathan Gonzalez and Horwitz.

The monstrous inning pushed Radford's lead to 8-5. Fritz teamed up Colin Reid to strikeout the side in the seventh as the Highlanders went into the bottom half of the inning looking for insurance runs.

The bottom half of the seventh saw four more singles. Three Highlanders crossed the plate on a pair of RBI singles from Whitacre and Butler, while Horwitz executed a perfect sacrifice bunt play to score the final Radford run of the ballgame.

QUOTABLE
  • "We played well this weekend. Rider came into this series taking two out of three at Georgia and spiting a midweek series with Campbell. Our team played defense the whole weekend and was really efficient at the plate. I thought our bullpen was really good. The tempo, energy and pace that we played with is what's expected in our program. I couldn't be prouder of our efforts." ~ Radford head coach Joe Raccuia

UP NEXT
