RADFORD BOUNCES BACK FOR TWO VICTORIES BEHIND MORROW

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Led by two strong pitching performances by Abby Morrow, the Radford softball team posted its second Saturday sweep of the season, defeating Youngstown State 3-1 and Furman 2-1, as it closed out play in the Upstate Classic.

Morrow allowed just one earned run and nine hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in the two complete-game victories, moving her to 7-3 on the season. Each of the nine hits were singles. She also totaled 25 groundball outs.

Offensively, Brittany Wratchford, Maggie Rowe and Sofia Tapia had RBIs in the Youngstown win, while Hannah Medlam went 2 for 2 with a run scored against Furman and Mallory Marsicek drove in a run.

Radford 3, Youngstown State 1
The Highlanders avenged their loss against Youngstown, which had followed with a win over USC Upstate later Friday. Morrow allowed five hits and struck out five. She cruised through the first three innings and retired the first 14 Penguin batters before limiting the damage late in the game.

Offensively, Radford totaled 10 hits and scored single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Wratchford, Tapia and Callie Morgan each collected two hits, with the latter notching her first career multi-hit game for the latter.

Morgan scored the team's first run after leading off the third with a single. She moved to second on a sacrifice by Marissa Gagliano and came home on Wratchford's RBI single through the left side.

Morrow pitched around a pair of errors in the fourth, with help from an inning-ending putout at home on a throw by second baseman Morgan following the second error.

The Highlanders then made it 2-0 in the sixth on a pair of two-out hits as Rowe followed a Summer Robinson single with an RBI double down the left-field line, her fifth two-batter of the season.

Youngstown get on the board in the bottom of inning on two more defensive miscues around a single, but Radford got another key putout on the bases as left-fielder Medlam threw to third and caught the Penguin runner trying to advance from second.

Tapia then provided an insurance run with another two-out, run-scoring hit, as she drove in Medlam with a single up the middle. Medlam, who had three hits on the day, had left off the inning with a single and moved to second on a groundout.

Radford 2, Furman 1
Morrow again worked three perfect innings to start the game before finishing with a four-hitter. She struck out four and recorded 14 groundball outs.

Hannah Medlam had the first hit for either team, leading off the third by dropping a bloop double down the left-field line. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Marsicek's sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead.

Tapia scored the eventual-game winning run in the fourth, drawing a leadoff walk – her 13th of the season – and following with her 10th stolen base. After going to third on another wild pitch, she scored when the third baseman wasn't able to field a grounder off the bat of Rowe.

Furman got its lone run in the fifth, following a throw error with back-to-back singles, the first one a liner that went off Morrow. However, she recovered after the second one to get an inning-ending groundout. Morrow then retired five straight before a two-out single in the seventh, but Rowe threw out the runner trying to steal, ending the game.

Radford (8-6) will try again to play its first home games of the season, hosting Virginia for a doubleheader Tuesday, starting at 1 p.m.
