RADFORD DOWNS VIRGINIA 5-2 IN HOME OPENER

RADFORD, Va. – After having its home opener postponed twice by weather, the Radford softball team made sure the wait was worth it, taking a 5-2 victory over Virginia Wednesday afternoon for its third straight win and second of the season over an ACC opponent.

Marissa Gagliano went 2 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored, while Brittany Wratchford capped the Highlanders' scoring with a two-run homer. Abby Morrow allowed just one earned run in another complete-game effort to earn her eighth win of the season and 39th of her career, tying for fifth-most on the program's all-time list.

Morrow allowed eight hits, struck out one and didn't walk a batter for the fourth straight game, while stranding eight Virginia runners. She limited the damage to just one run during a first inning in which Radford committed three errors and pitched out of trouble a couple of other times.

Gagliano sparked the offense to tie the game in the third inning, finding the gap in left-center for a two-out triple before scoring on an infield single up the middle by Sofia Tapia.

The Highlanders (9-6) took a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Mallory Marsicek and Gagliano got it started with back-to-back one-out singles and Tapia walked to load the bases. Marsicek then came home on a wild pitch, with Gagliano moving up a base before scoring on a passed ball.

Wratchford then added the insurance runs in the sixth, blasting a 2-1 pitch off of one of the light poles in left field for her second home run of the season. Summer Robinson had led off the frame by doubling to shallow center and scored on the homer.

Virginia tried to make it interesting in the seventh, getting a run on a single, double and groundout, but Robinson snagged a flyball in right to end it. Earlier, Morrow had left a Cavalier runner on third base in the third, pitched out out of a two-on, one-out jam in the fourth and worked around a leadoff double in the sixth.

Radford will now return to the road, beginning with a three-game series at Morehead State, which has been moved up a day due to the forecast for inclement weather over the weekend. The teams are now scheduled to play doubleheader on Friday, starting at 1 p.m., and a single game Saturday at 12 p.m.
