RADFORD UNABLE TO COMPLETE SWEEP; FALLING 6-4 TO GEORGE MASON

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: George Mason 6, Radford 4
  • Records: Patriots (5-8) | Highlanders (3-10)
  • Location: Spuhler Field | Fairfax, Va.

FAIRFAX, Va. – Radford was unable to complete the two-game sweep of George Mason as the Patriots tallied four runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-4 victory in the final game of the Commonwealth clash.

The Patriots held a 10-8 hit advantage as the George Mason bullpen held the Highlanders hitless for the final three innings. Radford collected five of its hits during the first three innings.

Radford scored first for the fourth consecutive game as the Highlanders opened the game with an Adam Whitacre leadoff walk and Danny Hrbek single. Jonathan Gonzalez followed with a double into right field to plate two runs.

The lead was short lived as George Mason answered back with two runs of their own on a pair of RBI singles from Logan Driscoll and Brady Acker in the bottom half of the inning.

In the top of the third, Radford regained the lead as Spencer Horwitz collected his second single of the game with one out in the inning. After swiping second base, Matt Roth's third double of the season scored Horwitz, handing the Highlanders a 3-2 lead.

George Mason strung together a big inning in the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits and one error. The Patriots forced two Radford pitching changes in the inning. Singles by Tyler Neilin and Driscoll plated runs, while a two-run single into center field off the bat of Greg Popatak gave George Mason a 6-3 lead. All four Patriot runs came with two outs.

Austin Gerber came out of the bullpen to get the Highlanders out of the inning as the freshman held the Patriots to two hits in 4.1 innings of relief.

Radford only managed three hits after the George Mason four-run fourth inning. The Highlanders got a run back in the sixth, greeting new Patriot pitcher Jakob Ryan. Roth lined his second double of the day down the left field line as Kyle Butler followed with a RBI single to left-center field.

Butler's third RBI of the series would be all the Highlanders could manage, dropping the contest 6-4.
