RADFORD SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT GARDNER-WEBB

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford softball team extended its win streak to four games with a 6-4 victory over Gardner-Webb in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, but saw it end there with a 4-1 defeat in the nightcap.

Hunter Mundy went 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs in the victory, giving her hits in eight straight contests and an RBI in 11 consecutive for the Highlanders (16-14, 2-3).

In the second game, Kayla Huffman held Gardner-Webb off the board into the fourth before her scoreless innings streak was stopped at 30.

Game 1
Radford totaled 12 hits and built a 6-0 lead before holding a seventh-inning rally by the home team. Kayla Bishton added two hits and two RBIs, Lindsey Toneygay hit her first career home run and Sofia Tapia and Lauren Maddrey each chipped in two hits.

Abby Morrow (12-7) got the complete-game victory, pitching six shutout innings with just one hit allowed, before the Runnin' Bulldogs scored four runs in their final at-bat on three hits. She had four strikeouts and retired 13 straight batters heading into the seventh.

The Highlanders put a runner on in each of the first three frames, but was thrwarted by a pair of double plays before putting three straight hits together to begin the fourth and take a 2-0 lead. Sofia Tapia led off with her second single, Mundy singled to center and Bishton split the gap with a drive to right-center and the ball rolled to the fence for a two-run triple.

Radford added another run in the fifth as infield hits by Lauren Maddrey and Marissa Gagliano and two fielder's choices put runners on first and third. Mundy then grounded one past the first baseman for a two-out RBI single.

Toneygay provided the eventual game-winning runs with her pinch-hit two-run homer in the sixth, following up a double by Summer Robinson by putting one over the fence in left-center with two outs to make it 5-0. The Highlanders capped their scoring in the seventh as Mundy led off with a double, Bishton singled and Maggie Rowe hit a sacrifice fly to center.

The extra runs came in handy when Gardner-Webb spoiled the shutout and made it interesting in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff double and an error scored one run, Morrow's first walk put two on and Callie Thornton hit a three-run homer. The Runnin' Bulldogs added a single before Morrow got the next two batters to end the game.

Game 2
Radford was held to just two hits by Gardner-Webb's Mackenzie Thompson, but rallied to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth. Gardner-Webb, though, regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Neither team had a hit until the third inning, although Huffman did have to work, stranding runners on third base in the both the first and third to keep the scoreless run going. However, the Runnin' Bulldogs loaded the bases in the fourth on a bloop double and a pair of two-out walks. A third straight free pass followed on a full count to bring home the run.

A two-out single to center by Rowe scored Hannah Medlam with the tying run in the sixth. Medlam drew a pinch-hit, leadoff walk before moving second on a groundout.

The Runnin' Bulldogs' went back ahead on a single and a double, and added two more runs on an RBI single and an error.

Huffman totaled nine strikeouts and seven walks in the game, while allowing six hits.

The teams will play the series finale Sunday at 2 p.m.
