RADFORD, Va. – Locked in a 3-3 tie after four innings, Virginia Tech outscored Radford 14-3 in the final five frames as the Hokies completed the season sweep over the Highlanders in the battle of New River Valley foes on Tuesday night.

The Hokies scored the first two runs of the game on a Radford throwing error and Raheem Cooper solo home run.

Trailing 2-0, Jonathan Gonzalez led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run to right field, just sneaking the ball around the foul pole.  Gonzalez's sixth round-tripper on the season inched the Highlanders within one run.

Tom Stoffel answered with a solo shot to right field, pushing the Virginia Tech lead back to two runs in the top of the third.

Radford starter Andrew Nardi tossed his first three up, three down inning in the fourth as the Highlanders looked to gain momentum from the first scoreless frame by the Hokies.

The Highlanders greeted newly entered Culver Hughes with three straight hits. Kyle Butler and Danny Hrbek led off the inning with a pair of singles. After advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch, Gonzalez plated Butler on a RBI single.

Virginia Tech made another pitching change and Spencer Horwitz knotted the contest with a RBI fielders' choice off Aaron McDonald. Standing in a three all tie, Radford loaded the bases, but was unable to take advantage.

The top of the fifth saw Virginia Tech blow the game wide open with seven runs on four hits. The Hokies received a pair of two-run doubles off the bats of Sam Fragale and Stevie Mangrum. Radford pitchers also walked in two runs during the inning.

Leading 10-3, Virginia Tech added two more in the sixth on a Mangrum two-run home run.

Richard De la Cruz led off the bottom half of the seventh with a bloop double into left field and Luke Wise followed with a single. Possessing runners on the corners and no outs, Clayton Baine launched a three-run opposite field home run to right, pulling Radford within 12-6.

Virginia Tech added five more runs in the eighth on four hits, highlighted by its fourth home run of the evening, a two-run shot off the bat of Mac Caples, ensuring the Hokies 17-6 victory.
