RIDGELY YIELDS ONLY TWO HITS IN 2-0 WIN OVER CAMPBELL

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Radford 2, Campbell 0

  • Location: Jim Perry Stadium | Buies Creek, N.C.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Radford snapped its four-game skid with a dominate eight-inning two-hit pitching performance by Zack Ridgely as the left-hander combined with closer Kyle Zurak for a 2-0 shutout of Campbell, Thursday night in the Big South opener.

Ridgely yielded two hits in the third inning and retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced. The lefty walked two batters, a rarity as the junior entered the game with only seven walks to his name.

The eight-shutout innings add to his remarkable Big South stats. In four starts, Ridgely has only allowed five earned runs in 28 innings, striking out 23 batters. In those 28 innings, only five walks have been surrendered.

Having only scored first three times in the last 10 games, Radford handed Ridgely an early lead to work with, striking first in the top of the second. Matt Roth tallied the first hit of the game on a single to center field with one out in the inning. Roth would go on to swipe second base with Spencer Horwitz at the dish.

Entering the game with 13 hits with runners in scoring position, Horwitz fouled out to third base for the second out in the inning.

Anthony Miano came through with a two-out single up the middle on a 1-2 pitch as Roth raced home, giving Miano his first two-out RBI on the season. Miano advanced to second base via wild pitch, but the Highlanders were unable to push across another run.

Allowing only one base runner through the first nine batters faced, Ridgely's only jam in the game came in the third inning. Drew Butler collected a two-out single to right-center for the first Fighting Camel hit. Matthew Barefoot followed with a first pitch single to left.

Butler stole third to put runners on the corners with Jeff Hahs at the plate. Ridgely escaped the jam with a seven-pitch fly out to center field.

Pitching like he only needed one run, Radford gave Ridgely an insurance run in the fifth. Miano collected his second hit of the game on an infield single off and Clayton Baine followed with an infield single to third.

With two-runners on base, Richard De la Cruz ripped a 2-1 pitch up the middle, just missing Andrew Witczak's head on the mound. De la Cruz's 12th RBI gave Radford its second and final run.

Witczak and reliever Harry Thomas combined to retire the Highlanders in order five times in the game, holding Radford to one hit over the final four frames.

Receiving his first save opportunity since March 18, Zurak struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save on the season as the duo combined for the shutout.
