GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Radford 7, Campbell 4
  • Records: Highlanders (16-19, 6-6) | Fighting Camels (16-20, 5-7)
  • Location: Jim Perry Stadium | Buies Creek, N.C.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – For the first time since May 2015, Radford collected a Big South road sweep by winning its eighth straight road game at Campbell with a 7-4 win in the Saturday series finale. Radford outscored the Fighting Camels 17-9 in the three-game Easter Weekend series.

The series sweep marks the first on the season by the Highlanders, collecting a Big South sweep after being swept by Liberty last weekend. Radford has not lost a game in Buies Creek since March 29, 2013. The Highlanders hold a 12-7 record over the Fighting Camels since they reentered the league in 2012.

Radford struck first for the third straight game as Danny Hrbek put himself in scoring position with one swing of the bat as the senior lined a triple down the right field line. His second three-bagger on the season gives him 12th on the season, two away from matching the program record.

Hrbek did not have to stand on third base long as Jonathan Gonzalez launched a two-run home run over the left-center field wall for his seventh home run on the season. Gonzalez's 24th and 25th RBIs on the season gave Radford an early 2-0 lead.

Spencer Horwitz followed with a walk and Matt Roth singled to center, forcing Campbell to make a pitching change with only one out in the inning. The Fighting Camels brought Tyson Messer on to replace starter Ryan Kirk. Messer struck out the next two batters he faced to end the Radford threat.

Radford starter Ryan Sande retired seven out of the first eight batters he faced, before allowing a one-out single to Adam Wyse in the bottom of the third. Wyse proceeded to steal second, scoring on a Matthew Barefoot single to left-center.

Radford answered the run as Anthony Miano led off the fourth with a walk, swiping second for his second career stolen base. Cody Schneider laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving Miano to third.

As Richard De la Cruz stood at the plate, Miano scored on a 1-2 wild pitch from Messer to give Radford a two-run lead back at 3-1. De la Cruz contributed a double down the right field line on the next pitch. The freshman stole third base, but the Highlanders were unable to push across another run.

The Fighting Camels answered back in the bottom half of the inning with Zach Minnick reaching on a hit by pitch, later scoring on a Kyle Mehl RBI double down left field line. Mehl advanced to third on a Christian Jones swinging strikeout wild pitch.

Austin Gerber came on in relief of Sande, throwing two pitches to get Wyse to fly out to center to get out of the jam.

Gerber proceeded to hold the Fighting Camels to only one hit over 4.1 innings of relief. The lone hit surrendered by the freshman was a Jeff Hahs leadoff home run in the bottom of the eighth. Gerber struck out two and walked only one as he earned his third collegiate win.

Radford added its fifth run in the top half of the eighth as Miano led off the inning with a double to the left-center field gap, advancing to third on a De la Cruz ground out. Miano scored his second run of the game via wild pitch.

Adding two insurance runs in the ninth, Kyle Butler led off the inning with a double to the left-center field gap. Hrbek moved Butler over to third on a ground out, while Gonzalez collected his third RBI on the day, reaching on a fielders' choice. On the ground ball to short, Wyse's throw to home sailed high as Butler crossed the plate.

Matt Roth kept the inning alive, reaching on a fielding error by the Campbell third baseman, putting runners on first and second. Miano kept his strong day at the plate going, ripping a two-out single to left-center, plating Gonzalez for the final run of the game to complete the sweep with a 7-4 win.

QUOTABLE
  • "We left some runs on the bases that obviously would have helped us extend leads. I thought [Austin] Gerber did a solid job out of the bullpen after [Ryan] Sande gave us a good start. Today, we did just enough to complete the sweep. I thought it was important that we scored late in the game. I am very proud of our guys. It's not easy to sweep at home and it's especially not easy to beat team three times on the road." ~ Radford head coach Joe Raccuia
