RADFORD FALLS 5-4 IN SERIES FINALE VS. CAMPBELL

RADFORD, Va. – Radford and Campbell combined for eight runs before lightning interrupted Saturday's series finale during the third inning, and the Fighting Camels tallied the only score after play resumed to come away with a 5-4 decision to earn the sweep.

Kayla Bishton had two hits, including a two-run triple for the Highlanders (20-20, 4-8), while Brooke Trapuzzano had a two-run double in the first at-bat of her first collegiate start. Hannah Medlam added two hits, including a double, and a run scored.

Abby Morrow went the distance, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with one strikeout and two walks. Three Radford errors led to two unearned runs.

Campbell (26-20, 11-4) struck first in the top of the second inning as two singles were followed by an error that scored a run. Radford was able to record back-to-back outs at the plate, but a two-out double down the left-field line by No. 9 hitter Christa Hall made it 2-0.

The Highlanders, though, answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning against Campbell starter Holly Brooks. A throwing error started the frame before Medlam doubled off the glove of the center fielder. Trapuzzano then hit the first pitch she saw into the gap in left-center to tie the game at 2-2. Marissa Gagliano followed with a bunt single and Bishton drove one to the fence in right-center for a two-run triple to make it 4-2.

The Fighting Camels came back to score twice just before lighting caused a delay in the top of the third with a walk in between four singles, the last an infield hit off the end of the bat that tied it at 4-4. Play was then stopped and resumed after a delay of one hour and 20 minutes, with Campbell having the bases loaded and one out. Morrow won a battle nine-pitch battle with a called strikeout, but Hall hit the next pitch past the glove of Mundy for a two-out single to plate the deciding run.

Radford had a chance in the bottom of the inning when Mundy hit a two-out triple to right-field corner. After a walk to Maggie Rowe, Campbell pitcher Katie Baker got a strikeout to escape. She then retired nine of the last 10 Highlanders to preserve the lead. Baker notched the win with 5.2 innings of relief, allowing three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Radford will start a busy week with a doubleheader at Hampton on Tuesday, starting at 11 a.m., before coming home to host its makeup game against Virginia Tech Wednesday at 5 p.m.
