PITCHING, 7TH-INNING OFFENSE GIVE RADFORD SWEEP AT HAMPTON

HAMPTON, Va. – Pitchers Abby Morrow and Kayla Huffman kept Hampton off the scoreboard and Radford scored all five of its runs in the seventh innings to give the Highlanders 2-0 and 3-0 victories for the doubleheader sweep Tuesday afternoon.

Morrow scattered eight hits to notch her third shutout of the year and Summer Robinson hit a one-out two-run single to win the opener. Huffman tossed her first career seven-inning one-hitter and struck out 13 in the nightcap, with Lauren Maddrey, Brooke Trapuzzano and Kayla Bishton providing RBI hits.

Radford has won nine of its last 10 non-conference games and improved to 22-20 overall on the season.

Game 1
Radford had just two baserunners against Hampton pitcher Allyson Babinsack over the first six innings. Trapuzzano walked in the second and Bishton was hit by a pitch leading off the fourth.

Bishton reached again without a hit to start the seventh as the Hampton shortstop bobbled a groundball, enabling Bishton to beat the throw to first. Two batters later, a liner by Maggie Rowe went off the glove of the Pirates' left-fielder, putting runners on second and third with one out. Robinson then provided the Highlanders' first hit, singling a 2-2 pitch back up the middle past the diving second baseman, scoring Bishton and pinch-runner Callie Morgan, and extending her hitting streak to seven games.

Hampton threatened in the bottom of the inning, getting a leadoff single and a two-out single, but a grounder to Marissa Gagliano for a forceout at second secured the victory and the shutout.

Morrow was able to work around the eight Hampton singles – including two infield hits – in the game. She stranded seven Pirate runners, with at least one in five of the seven innings, while another runner was thrown out by Rowe trying to go first to third on a wild pitch. Morrow recorded two strikeouts without a walk to claim her 15th win and third shutout of the year.

Game 2
Huffman began the game by striking out the first eight batters and took a no-hitter into the sixth before a bunt single by Pirates' leadoff batter Taylor Warrick started the frame. After a popout, Warrick stole second and third, but Huffman followed with her 12th strikeout and Maddrey caught a flyball in center to end the inning.

Brittany Wratchford then led off the seventh with a single to left field. Hannah Medlam put down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a fielding error, with Wratchford advancing to third. Maddrey then poked a single past the third base for the game-deciding run. Trapuzzano followed with a run-scoring hit for the second time in three games and Bishton capped the scoring on a single to center.

Huffman capped the game with her final strikeout and two flyouts, securing her fourth shutout of the season. The sophomore, who also had a five-inning one-hitter last month against Norfolk State, recorded at least one strikeout in every inning, while pitching around three walks.

The Highlanders, who stranded a pair of runners in both the first and second innings, totaled seven hits in the game, with Maddrey collecting two.

Radford is back in action Wednesday evening as it plays host to Virginia Tech at 5 p.m.
