RADFORD DOMINATES VA. TECH IN 8-0 FIVE-INNING VICTORY

RADFORD, Va. – All three phases of the game were working for the Radford softball team Wednesday evening as it used strong pitching, balanced offense and flawless defense to post a dominating 8-0 five-inning blanking of Virginia Tech for its first victory over the Hokies since 2010.

Abby Morrow tossed a three-hitter for the team's third shutout win in two days, while each starter in the lineup had at least one hit and five contributed RBIs, as the Highlanders ended an 10-game losing streak to their New River Valley foes and shut out them out for the first time since 2006 and the first time ever at Radford.

Maggie Rowe went 2 for 3 with a double and bookended Radford's scoring with RBI hits, while Marissa Gagliano also doubled and tied her career-high with three RBIs. Kayla Bishton, Lauren Maddrey and Brooke Trapuzzano each drove in single runs.

After Morrow retired the Hokies in order in the first, Rowe provided the only run the sophomore pitcher needed. Hunter Mundy drew a two-out walk to extend the inning and Rowe followed with a RBI double over the rightfielder, her ninth two-bagger of the season.

The Highlanders then added two more runs in the second and broke it open with four in the third. Brittany Wratchford led off the second with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Hannah Medlam. Maddrey then drew a walk and Trapuzzano hit a hard liner off the glove of the pitcher for an infield hit to load the bases. Gagliano then poked a two-run double down the left-field line to make it 3-0.

Radford then used three hits, three walks and a Virginia Tech error for the four-run third. Summer Robinson hit a leadoff single and Wratchford walked before the Hokies changed pitchers for the second time. After a fielding error by the shortstop loaded the bases, Maddrey singled through the left side, Trappuzano and Gagliano drew a bases-loaded walks and Bishton singled to left for four straight run-scoring plays before Virginia Tech recorded an out.

The best Hokies' scoring chance against Morrow came in the fifth as a walk and a single started the inning. However, Morrow got a flyout to right, a forceout at second and one of five groundouts to Mundy in the game to preserve the shutout.

The Highlanders then walked off in the bottom of the inning as Mundy hit a two-out double to left-center – her ninth of the season – and Rowe followed with a single to right-center.

Morrow's lone strikeout in the game came on the first batter she faced, 11 of the other 14 outs coming on the ground. She retired eight of the first nine batters she faced before a two-out single in the third for the first hit. Mundy and Gagliano each made strong plays on the left side early and Morrow helped herself by snagging a hard liner in the second.

Radford, which posted its third victory over an ACC team in four games this season, now returns to Big South play this weekend for its last conference road series, traveling to Presbyterian for a Saturday doubleheader and single game on Sunday.
