RADFORD TAKES OPENER AT PRESBYTERIAN WITH RUN IN 7TH

CLINTON, S.C. – For the third straight time on the road this week, the Radford softball team went into the seventh inning tied, and for the third time the Highlanders took the lead and held on to win, this one a 2-1 decision over Presbyterian in the teams' Big South series opener Friday afternoon.

Maggie Rowe led off the seventh with a single and pinchrunner Callie Morgan came all the way around from first to score the deciding run after a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt. Abby Morrow then pitched around a two-out hit for the Blue Hose in the bottom of the inning, fielding a comebacker off the bat of PC leadoff batter Jonnie Petree for the final out.

Hunter Mundy had an RBI single to score the other run for the Highlanders, who won their fourth straight and improved to 24-20 and 5-8 in the conference. Hannah Medlam had the other two Radford hits in the pitchers' duel, while Marissa Gagliano scored a run.

Morrow (17-10) allowed just the one earned run on six hits, three of them bunt singles, while striking out six without a walk. It was her 48th career victory, tying Sharee' Fletcher for fourth-most in program history.

Neither team recorded a hit in the game until a miscommunication by the Radford defense on a swinging bunt led led to an infield single with two outs in the bottom of the third. Presbyterian capitalized with a stolen base and a two-out single up the middle by Blaire Miller for a 1-0 lead.

The Highlanders answered right away in the top of the fourth to tie it, when Gagliano drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice by Kayla Bishton and scored on a Mundy's single to center.

Radford had a chance in the fifth when Medlam doubled to left-center with one outs. However, the Blue Hose brought in a lefty Alex Cook in relief of starter Katie Brown and she got back-to-back groundouts.

Presbyterian (16-29, 5-11) threatened in the sixth on a leadoff single and a sacrifice, but Gagliano fielded a grounder for a 6-5 putout at third and a groundout to Mundy ended the inning.

Rowe then started the seventh by poking a single into right-center. Summer Robinson then laid down the bunt and the throw by Presbyterian's first baseman was high, sending the ball down the right-field foul territory, and Morgan slid in just ahead of the tag after the throw back home.

Petree had two of the bunt hits and scored the lone Blue Hose run.

The teams will complete the series with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
