RADFORD FALLS TO LONGWOOD IN 1-0 PITCHERS’ DUEL

RADFORD, Va. – In a series between two of the Big South's top three in terms of ERA, runs figured to be at a premium between Radford and Longwood, and that was the case in Friday night's opener as the Lancers got a seventh-inning tally to claim a 1-0 victory.

Abby Morrow and Longwood's Elizabeth McCarthy dominated the game, combining to allow just four hits, but it was a bloop single off the bat of Jessica Smith with one out in the seventh that plated the crucial run. Krista Kelly has led off the inning with a double to right field and scored from third when Smith's blooper dropped into shallow right.

McCarthy was perfect through six innings, but the Highlanders (25-23, 6-10) threatened in the bottom of the inning. First, Marissa Gagliano spoiled the no-hitter by slicing a leadoff single into left field. She then moved to second on a sacrifice by Hannah Medlam and Hunter Mundy drew a walk. However, McCarthy followed with a strikeout and popout to the second baseman in shallow right field to end the game.

McCarthy recorded 10 strikeouts with the one walk and threw 82 pitches in the game. Morrow (18-12) suffered her second straight tough-luck loss, allowing just three hits, with the other one coming on an infield single. She struck out two, walked three and threw 84 pitches.

Only one runner had reached second base in the game before Kelly's double. That came in the third as Longwood got the infield single by Destiny Martinez, who then went to second on a groundout. Morrow got a popout and another groundout to end that inning.

She followed with a seven-pitch fourth inning, worked around a walk in the fifth and had a four-pitch sixth before Kelly hit a 2-1 pitch over Summer Robinson.

Longwood (22-26, 11-8) recorded its third shutout in five games and sixth win in its last seven.

The series concludes with Saturday's doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. The opener will be the first Radford home softball game to be broadcast on ESPNU.
