SECOND HALF SURGE LEADS RADFORD TO FIRST EVER BIG SOUTH VICTORY

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford women's lacrosse team outscored Gardner-Webb 11-5 in the second half leading them to a 19-12 win on Wednesday. It was the Highlanders first Big South Conference victory in program history.
 
Adrian Rius scored just a little over 30 seconds into the game to put Radford (5-6, 1-1 Big South) up, 1-0. Maddie Stephens answered with a goal of her own tying the game at one apiece. The two teams traded goals before Radford went on a 4-0 run over the next five minutes taking a 6-2 lead.
 
Gardner-Webb (0-12, 0-2 Big South) cut the deficit to two with 16:06 remaining in the first half. Emma Rogers found the back of the net twice to extend the lead to four-goals, but the Runnin' Bulldogs notched three straight goals to go into the locker room down one, 8-7.
 
The Highlanders went on a 6-2 run over the first 12 minutes of the second half. Six different players scored in that span and Lindsey Carroll assisted on one goal. The run gave Radford a 14-9 lead with 18:37 to play.
 
Abby Hanscom scored for Gardner-Webb with 15:20, which made it a 14-10 game. Callie Bonnel, Emily Kowalik and Rogers each scored unassisted goals that gave the Highlanders their biggest lead of the game, 17-10 with 7:36 to go.
 
After two Garder-Webb goals, Kowalik and Rius capitalized goals with under 1:30 to play sealing the milestone victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  Radford outshot Gardner-Webb 46-29, including 24 shots in the second half and only allowing 13.
•  The Highlanders landed 32 of the 46 shots on goal for a 69.5 shot on goal percentage.
•  Radford led Gardner-Webb in ground ball pick-ups, securing 24 to the Runnin' Bulldogs 23 and won 17 draw controls, which is one more than Gardner-Webb.
•  Adrian Rius led the team with five goals and won six draw controls.
•  Emma Rogers scored four goals and had one assist, while Callie Bonnel, Emily Kowalik and Juliette Ruland scored three goals each. Bonnel and Ruland picked up one assist.
•  Lindsey Carroll tallied five assists and had one goal, but led the team with six points and four ground balls.
•  Defensively, Shea Swingle, Kowalik and Rogers caused a game-high two turnovers.
•  Kowalik also won four draws, which is a career-high for the redshirt-freshman.
•  Maddie Mashewske picked up nine saves and has recorded 23 saves over the past two games.

UP NEXT
Radford will look to make it two in a row and travel to Rock Hill, S.C., on Saturday to take on Winthrop in the first Big South road contest of the 2017 season. First draw is slated for 1 p.m.
