ANDERSON RETIRES AFTER 21 SEASONS AS MEN'S TENNIS HEAD COACH

RADFORD, Va. – Radford University's men's tennis head coach Mike Anderson announced his retirement Friday afternoon after leading the program for 21 seasons.

Since taking over in 1997, Anderson put together one of the most dominant programs in the history of the Big South Conference, leading the Highlanders to a 276-199 record and an 84-54 clip in Big South play. Under Anderson's guidance, Radford put together 13 seasons with a winning record, including five 20-win seasons.

"It was a privilege to be able to coach NCAA Division I tennis at a great school like Radford. Time takes all, but memories and I have great memories to last a lifetime," Anderson said. "The tennis program is in good shape and ready for some new invigorated leadership. I will always be a Radford fan."

From 2006-2012, Anderson's Highlanders were 127-36 overall and 41-3 in conference regular season matches, while winning six Big South regular season titles and making a school-record five NCAA Tournament appearances.

In addition to its postseason resume, which includes a 17-3 record in Big South Tournament matches from 2006-2012, Radford won 57 of its 60 home matches.

"We would like to thank Coach Anderson for everything he has given to our men's tennis program," said Director of Athletics Robert Lineburg. "We appreciate his contributions to Radford Athletics and wish him the very best in future endeavors."

The six-time Big South Coach of the Year has had several Highlanders over the years gain conference, regional and national recognition. In his 21 years at the helm, Radford garnered 49 all-conference selections, 34 in singles and 15 in doubles.

During Anderson's tenure, Radford produced six Big South Players of the Year (Martin Sayer, 2006-09; Nick Sayer, 2012; Patrick O'Keefe, 2015) and five Big South Freshmen of the Year.

Along with the team's success, Radford has been represented in the NCAA Singles Championships seven times. Martin Sayer earned the league's automatic bid from 2006-09, while Ivan Salec (2010-11) and Nick Sayer (2012) advanced championships thanks to their national ranking. In 2009, Martin Sayer and Zack Watson became the first and only duo in school history to earn a doubles invite to the NCAA Championships.

A national search for the next head coach will begin immediately.
