HIGHLANDERS WRAP UP PLAY IN SOUTHERN INTERCOLLEGIATE

ATHENS, Ga. – Three Highlanders spent the weekend participating in the 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by Georgia Sept. 8-11, marking the first action of the 2017-18 season.

"It was a positive outcome in a very strong field with several SEC teams, conference champions, and a national champion in Georgia Gwinnett," said head coach Rolando Vargas.

Rodrigo Magalhaes, Alexandros Caldwell and Robin Calais represented Radford in the championships.

Magalhaes opened with Ole Miss' Filip Kraljevic in the Division I singles bracket, falling 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The freshman battled back to win the next two matches in the consolation bracket. He defeated Georgia Gwinnett's Frederico Herrera Duran 6-4, 6-3 and collected a win over Josh Howard-Trip of Arkansas.

"Rodrigo showed that he is capable of beating anyone as he defeated a player from Georgia Gwinnett and Arkansas," Vargas added.

Caldwell dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Georgia State's Jack MaFarlane in the Division II Singles bracket. The junior joined Magalhaes with two wins in consolation action. Caldwell defeated Corey Smith of Kennesaw State (1-6, 6-2, 10-6) and Florida Atlantic's Ignacio Jimenez (2-6, 6-2, 10-8).

"Alex demonstrated big heart, coming from behind twice," Vargas noted.

Calais dropped his Division III Singles opener against Georgia State's Andrei Duarte (6-4, 6-1) and a consolation match against Marwan Abaza of Florida Atlantic (7-5, 6-3).

"Robin competed well, but missed to execute in key points," Vargas said.

Radford returns to action Oct. 6-8 in the Mercer Invitational in Macon, Ga.

"I was able to see things that we need to improve on and we will only get better," Vargas added. "I am looking forward to the next fall tournaments."
