RADFORD TOPS WINTHROP IN BIG SOUTH SHOOTOUT

RADFORD, Va. - The Radford women's soccer team came out firing and never relented to top Winthrop, 5-2, in a high-scoring affair on a beautiful Saturday night at Cupp Stadium.

After being shut out for the first time in 2017 at Saint Francis last weekend, the Highlanders wasted no time righting the ship by posting their second-highest goal output of the season, behind only a 6-goal outburst at Wofford on Sept. 1st. With the victory, Radford improves to 8-1-0 overall and 1-0-0 against Big South competition while the Eagles fall to 3-4-1 and 0-1-0 in conference play.

It was less than six minutes into the match when the Highlanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Junior midfielder Jasmine Casarez made a strong run through the middle of the pitch and freshman Alex Struder provided her with a perfect ball that cut through the Winthrop defense and put Casarez on goal. She finished it off for her seventh goal of the season to retake the team lead after fellow junior Jessica Wollmann tied her mark at six coming into the night.

Then, just over two minutes later, Head Coach Ben Sohrabi's dynamic attack struck once again. Wollmann drew the attention of two defenders down the right flank before laying the ball off for sophomore forward Nelia Perez. Perez utilized her speed to break toward the 18-yard box and then, from a very tight angle, put what looked to be a cross between the crossbar and the outstretched hand of the Winthrop keeper to double the lead.

Despite the early deficit, Winthrop wouldn't go down without a fight. The Eagles earned a free kick about 30 yards to the left of Radford's net and Izzy Barton fizzed it in to Clara Conboy for a header goal. The Highlanders' lead quickly returned to goals, however, as Casarez scored her second goal in the 21st minute. The Moreno Valley, Calif. native ran a give-and-go with Wollmann in the Winthrop box and flicked her assist into the back of the net.

Putting an exclamation mark on a wild first half, Winthrop's Keeley Leising scored off a long throw in from Courtney McLeod after the ball bounced through heavy traffic at the 35-minute mark to make it a 3-2 game going into the locker room for halftime.

Giving the Highlanders the insurance they needed, junior Jane Everett would go on to score her second goal of the season and first since the season-opener by slotting home a rebound off of sophomore defender Allyson Giannone's long free kick shot. Freshman Lily McLane then added her name to the stat sheet late in the match by stripping an Eagles defender of the ball and beating the keeper one-on-one for her first career goal.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Radford stayed undefeated at home with the victory, moving to 4-0 in games at Cupp Stadium this season
  • With her eighth assist of the season, Giannone is now tied for 10th in program history for single-season assists alongside Jordan Lundin (2014) and Suzanne Campbell (1989)
  • The Highlanders have scored exactly two-thirds of their goals in the second half with 18 of their 27 tallies coming after halftime
  • Winthrop was held to just four shots and zero goals in the second half after scoring twice on six shots in the first half. Radford won the overall shots battle, 18-10
  • Wollmann now has 18 points on six goals and six assists this season after entering the 2017 campaign with 17 points in the rest of her career combined

QUOTABLE
"I thought it was a vital game for us. Winthrop came out and challenged us really well in the first half, but we scored some nice goals. We came out of halftime with the goal of winning the second half no matter what the score ended up being and we did just that." - Head Coach Ben Sohrabi

"It was a great team effort tonight. It starts at the back for us, goes up through the midfielders and to the forwards as we all work together and we've been connecting really well this year. It's a big team effort and we've had a lot of success offensively." - Junior midfielder Jasmine Casarez

"We came out with the game plan to go in tough. Everyone did what they needed to do, everyone was in the spots they needed to be in and everyone stayed calm even when the game got a little crazy." - Junior midfielder Jane Everett
