CASAREZ NETS TWO IN VICTORY OVER MOUNT ST. MARY'S

EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Radford women's soccer team stayed undefeated thanks to a second half brace from junior midfielder Jasmine Casarez in a 2-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's at Waldron Family Stadium Friday night.

With the win, the Highlanders improve to 6-0-0 for the first time since 1993 when they began their season 10-0-0. On the other side, the Mountaineers fell to 3-4 as their losing streak extends to three games.

A physical and tightly contested match in the first half opened up into an end-to-end track meet in the second half and the Highlanders made the most of it. In the 55th minute, Casarez made a strong run down the right flank and got past her defender, but was brought down from behind resulting in the game's one and only yellow card handed out. Set piece specialist and sophomore defender Allyson Giannone stepped up and sent a high-arching cross into the box where Casarez leapt and headed home into the bottom left corner.

Casarez then doubled the Highlanders' lead in the 65th minute when she collected a loose ball, dribbled around multiple defenders and fired a right-footed shot from a sharp angle that found its way over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

It was an extremely well deserved result for the Moreno Valley, Calif. native considering she faced some tough look earlier on in the match. Sophomore forward Nelia Perez utilized her quick footwork to force a Mount defender into tripping her inside the 18-yard box with only a minute to play in the first half. Casarez confidently took the subsequent penalty kick, but her effort rang off the right cross bar and out of play.

The just two minutes before her breakthrough, Casarez put a shot on frame on a very similar set piece, but her header deflected off of the left post.

Mount St. Mary's fought hard until the final whistle and they made a game out of it when they pulled one back in the 80th minute. The Mount sent a high bouncing ball towards the goal and freshman goalkeeper was caught off her line as the ball bounded over her head so Marcella Fegler easily scored on the open net.

Dean was excellent other than that one mistake, however. Making her sixth collegiate start between the sticks, she made six saves including a huge diving stop to her left to preserve the Highlanders' lead late in the match.
