RADFORD, Va. – The previous three matchups inside the Dedmon Center between Radford and High Point were decided by three points or less, Tuesday night was nothing out of the ordinary as the Highlanders used a second-half comeback for a 50-47 Big South victory.

The Highlanders hold a 3-1 edge in those four matchups, while this win required some extra work as Radford trailed by as many as 10 points multiple times in the first half. Radford outscored High Point 38-27 over the final three quarters for its second win on the season when trailing at the half.

Possessing the same feel of several games during the 2016-17 season, Radford improves to 14-4 in games decided by three-points or less since 2015.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 14-2 lead off a 12-0 swing, forcing six first quarter turnovers by the Highlanders. Trailing 20-12 after the opening quarter, Radford made a charge to start the second frame as the Highlanders used a 10-4 run to inch within 24-22 with 3:22 remaining in the opening half.

Radford was unable to take advantage and knot the game as the Highlanders had three turnovers in the final 2:30 of the half. High Point forced nine Radford miscues in the half, turning them into 12 points to lead 28-23 at intermission.

Destinee Walker poured in 10 of her game-high 15 points, keeping the Highlanders within reach as a spark off the bench.

Trailing 37-29 with six minutes remaining in the third quarter, Jayda Worthy started a 11-0 Radford run with a layup and Claudia Quevedo knocked down a trey from the corner as the Highlanders stepped up their transitional play.

Walker would add five straight points as her three-point play would knot the game at 37, while giving Radford its first lead with a short corner floater at the 2:41 clip in the quarter.

The last time Radford did not trail in the game was the 7:47 mark in the opening frame as the Highlanders used nine fastbreak points in the third quarter to take a 42-39 lead, while the defense held High Point scoreless for over six minutes.

Janayla White helped build Radford its largest lead at five points as the senior pulled down an offensive rebound, finding Jen Falconer for a layup while sitting on the ground. White followed the assist 30 seconds later with a strong layup off a nice Lydia Rivers pass to give Radford a 46-41 lead with 7:30 left.

The Panthers battled back as Camryn Brown sunk her third 3-pointer and Kat Harris made two free throws, tying the game at 46, going into the 4:55 media timeout.

Providing six points in the 19-point third quarter, Worthy scored the final four Radford points as her layup off a Walker drive to the basket gave Radford a 50-47 lead with just under 20 seconds remaining. Worthy tallied 10 of her 14 points in the comeback.

High Point had two chances to tie the game with Brown taking both shots. Brown's first attempt hit iron and White was fouled on the rebound. After Radford called timeout to advance the ball, the Panther defense forced a jump ball on the inbounds pass, resulting in a Radford turnover.

Brown's second attempt went in-and-out of the basket as the buzzer sounded, snapping the Panthers eight-game win streak and first loss of the Big South slate.

QUOTABLE
  • "I thought tonight was what you want in a Big South game. It was very intense; every possession was contested and it wasn't a perfect game played by either team. The intensity and energy by both teams was very good. We were fortunate enough to come back and make enough plays at the end to win this game. This is a big win for us because High Point has been playing well. For us to win this game on our floor and to come down to the last possession like it has the last four years is huge. It was a great win tonight." ~ Radford head coach Mike McGuire
