RADFORD GRABS 3-1 WIN OVER WINTHROP ON SENIOR DAY

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford men's soccer team extended its Big South winning streak to three games with a 3-1 victory over Winthrop on Senior Day at Cupp Stadium.

The Highlanders improve to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in conference play to stay tied for second with Presbyterian in the standings. Winthrop drops to 3-10 overall including a 2-5 clip in Big South action.

Radford took control of the match early, dominating possession and forcing the Eagles to play on their heels. Redshirt senior forward Kieran Roberts was the first to notch a goal on the day, finishing off a penalty kick that fellow senior forward Khori Bennett won in the ninth minute. The goal, which was the 31st of his career, gave Roberts sole possession of fifth on Radford's all-time career goals scored list, passing former teammate Sivert Daehlie.

It didn't take long for the Highlanders to double their lead. Freshman forward Amadou Macky Diop scored in the 12th minute as his point-blank shot from the right side of the box bounced off the keepers' hands and spun backwards into the net. Roberts and senior forward Nick Mayhugh combined for assists on the play.

Radford saw out the rest of the half and entered the break with a 2-0 lead, but it never let up on the attack and pushed its lead to 3-0 early in the second half. Senior midfielder Jakob Strandsäter forced a turnover and spotted Bennett making a run down the center of the pitch before sending a ball forward in the 59th minute. Bennett got the keeper to lean the wrong way with a shoulder dip and then fired a low strike into the bottom left corner of the net.

The Eagles managed to pull one back in the 71st minute as Marc Carreras and Jonathan Foster strung together passes to Davis Bryan who scored.

Radford earned a 6-to-5 advantage in corner kicks and drew 11 fouls compared to just five committed. Freshman goalkeeper Sam Farrell improved to 6-2-0 as a starter this season thanks to six saves.
