MAGALHAES LEADS HIGHLANDERS AT ITA REGIONALS


 
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford men's tennis team wrapped up its fall campaign with the completion of the ITA Regionals on Saturday.
 
DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS
Junior Matko Varga represented the Highlanders in qualifying singles on Thursday as he looked to play his way into the main draw. The Daruvar, Croatia native got off to a great start, earning a 7-5, 6-3 victory over William & Mary's Tristan Bautil in the opening round.
   
Matko then went toe-to-toe with Bradley Mittleman of Old Dominion in his next match, but fell 3-6, 4-6 and was moved into the consolation bracket.
 
DAY TWO HIGHLIGHTS
Redshirt senior Michiel Meekers and junior Rodrigo Magalhaes got their chance to take on the court on Friday in the first round of the main draw.
 
Meekers dropped a 3-6, 2-6 decision to Daniel Pellerito of William & Mary, but Magalhaes kept Radford's hopes alive with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 win against Tommy Dodson of Villanova.
 
DAY THREE HIGHLIGHTS
Following his win on Friday, Magalhaes moved on to the main draw second round where he faced Virginia Tech's Mitch Harper. Harper, a product of Brisbane, Australia, entered the weekend as the No. 1 overall seed and the No. 12 player in the nation. Magalhaes held his own, but ultimately fell, 2-6, 1-6.
 
The Highlanders ended the ITA Regionals on a high note though thanks to two wins in the consolation bracket. Varga earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Guillermo Cagigas (Longwood) and Meekers grabbed a 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 victory against Luca Maldoner (ODU).
