RADFORD CLAIMS BIG SOUTH REGULAR SEASON TITLE WITH WIN OVER UNC ASHEVILLE

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Radford women's soccer team defeated UNC Ashville, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Greenwood Soccer Field and claimed its fifth Big South Regular Season Championship in program history.

Radford wasted no time on offense as the team took six shots in the first 12 minutes of play. The Highlanders maintained the possession throughout the first 20 minutes of the half and held UNC Asheville without a shot until the 20th minute.

The 14th shot of the first half for Radford found the back of the net. It was Jasmine Casarez, who has now scored six goals in the past three games. She received the pass from Lily McLane and gave Radford a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute.

The Highlanders totaled 16 shots in the first half and held the Bulldogs to four. 12 minutes into the second half Casarez found Nelia Perez, who finished with a score and extended the lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute.

Radford, knowing they had a two-goal advantage and was well on its way to a regular season championship, played more defensive and only took four shots for the remainder of the half. Even though none of those four shots converted, the Highlanders took a 3-0 lead in the 87th minute as Savannah Collier – a Bulldog defender – tried to clear the ball out of harms way, but she kicked it too hard and it went right into her own goal.

The misfortunate play with three minutes to go was icing on the cake for Radford. When the final horn sounded the Highlander bench cleared in celebration and met their teammates on the field. The win gave Radford its first Big South regular season title since 2013 and clinched the No. 1 seed in the Big South Conference Championship, which begins next weekend.

MOMENT THAT MATTERED
It was all Highlanders from the get-go as the newly crowned champs fired 16 shots in the first half, which set the tone early. Radford finished with 27 shots and 12 on goal. The Highlanders have fired 20-plus shots in their last six matches.

STAT OF THE MATCH
The Highlander defense was incredible on Saturday. Posting its sixth shutout of the season and second in a row, Radford held the Bulldogs to only eight shots. The eight shots mark the second lowest all season behind Hampton's six on October 10.

QUOTABLE (MATCH)
"We played great today," Ben Sohrabi said. "We had great possession all game long. I am really happy with how this team has handled playing four of the last five matches on the road and winning them all."

QUOTABLE (CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS)
"Taking care of business today and wrapping up the regular season championship is very special and great to see this group put their stamp on Radford women's soccer history," Sohrabi added. "Of course we have other goals ahead, but I'm really happy with the number one seed."

The Highlanders will return home for their final regular season match on Tuesday at 4 p.m., when Charleston Southern pays a visit to Cupp Stadium. The match was originally scheduled on Sept. 15, but was rescheduled due to weather conditions from Hurricane Florence.
