PAUPST’S GOLDEN GOAL GIVES RADFORD 2-1 VICTORY OVER WINTHROP

ROCK HILL, S.C. – In the first overtime period, Gabi Paupst scored the game-winning goal that gave the Radford women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Winthrop on Saturday at Eagle Field.

In the 96th minute Jessica Wollmann cut through two defenders and found an open Paupst. The sophomore took one touch and fired a shot. The ball went through some traffic and found its way past the diving Eagle goalkeeper for the golden goal.

After both teams traded possession in the first 15 minutes of the match, the Highlanders struck first in the 20th minute as Reese Degnan found some open space just outside the box and fired a shot towards the top left corner of the net past the outstretched keeper. It was Degnan's second goal of the season. The 1-0 lead didn't last long as Allie Thomas tied the match in the 24th minute with a score.
With the match tied at one, Radford fired 12 second half shots but none of them converted. There were some good opportunities as Radford took six shots in the final 15 minutes, but the Eagle defense kept the match tied. Since neither team could find the back of the net the match went into overtime.

The Highlanders pushed the tempo and kept firing shots as they compiled 23 in the match. Radford also had 12 corner kicks – seven in the second half – compared to the Eagles three. The defense held Winthrop to 12 shots at the end of regulation, but they took four shots in overtime.

MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Early in the overtime period, Winthrop fired its four shots within the first five minutes. One shot went wide and the other three were blocked. The Highlanders only took one shot in overtime and it was Paupst's golden goal.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Radford continued the offensive pressure and took 23 shots in the match. 11 of them came from Jasmine Casarez, which is a season-high and tied a career-high for the senior.

Saturday's golden goal gave Radford it's second consecutive overtime win of the season. The first came against High Point last Saturday in a 3-2 thrilling victory.

TWEET OF THE MATCH

QUOTABLE
"I thought we played well," Ben Sohrabi said. "It wasn't our best outing, but with playing on the road and with the South Carolina heat I thought we overcame a lot. Give a lot of credit to Winthrop. They were organized and had a lot of fight in them. We're happy to get the road conference win and glad to have some new scorers step up."

UP NEXT
