RADFORD FALLS VICTIM TO LATE RUN AGAINST NO. 17 NORTH CAROLINA STATE



RALEIGH, N.C. – Despite a hard-fought game, the Radford women's basketball team fell victim to a fourth quarter run and dropped a Sunday afternoon contest to No. 17 North Carolina State, 75-58, at Reynolds Coliseum.
 
Laney Corbin hit a three-pointer with 3:23 to go in the third quarter that tied the game at 42. Three free throws and a three-pointer by NC State put the game at 48-45 with 2:30 left in the quarter. The Wolfpack closed the third quarter on a 12-5 run and held a 10-point lead going into the fourth.
 
Bryonna McClean made a jump shot 35 seconds into the final period and cut the lead to eight. On the ensuing possession Elissa Cunane converted on a layup attempt and put the lead back to 10. The lead increased as NC State went on a 14-5 run over the next 6:41. The Highlanders had some open looks, but couldn't get anything to fall. Radford went 1-for-9 from the floor with a pair of free throws and a Destinee Walker trey. Walker's three-ball made it a 17-point contest, 71-54, with 2:44 remaining.
 
The Highlanders were within striking distance all night and extensively through the first three quarters. When the ball was tipped, the Highlanders jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but NC State raced back and took an 11-9 lead with 4:15 to play. Walker found Tina Lindenfield in the corner, who nailed a spot up three that gave Radford a 12-11 lead with 2:36 to go in the first quarter.
 
Radford kept the momentum going in the second quarter and took an 18-16 lead with 7:42 to play in the first half. The Wolfpack made a couple of baskets and regained the lead, 19-18. That lit a fire for Radford and Khiana Johnson hit a three at the top of the key for a two-point Highlander lead. After a Wolfpack turnover, Lindenfield hit her second three of the game and created Radford's largest lead, 24-19, with 5:44 in the half.
 
However, North Carolina State closed out the half with a 12-1 run and took a 31-25 lead into the locker room.
 
MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Radford tied the game with just under four minutes to play in the third quarter, but the Wolfpack ended the quarter on a 15-5 run. NC State's defense made it tough for the Highlanders as Radford only had three made field goals in the final quarter. North Carolina State also shot 53.8 percent from the floor with one three-pointer and went 3-for-3 from the free throw line.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
The game saw seven lead changes and five ties. Turnovers helped the Highlanders stay in it as North Carolina State committed 15 turnovers, to Radford's 14. Radford had 16 points off those turnovers.

Walker led the Highlanders with 15 points and shot 2-for-6 from behind the arc. Savannah Felgemacher was one point shy of another double-double. She led all players with 15 rebounds, picked up nine points and added two steals.
 
QUOTABLE
We learned a great deal about our team today," Mike McGuire said. "I am proud of how we went into that environment and competed against a talented and nationally ranked team the way we did. We played a solid first half and made a big run in the third quarter to tie the game. There are possessions throughout the second half that we can learn from that will help this team grow. We continue to gain value experience early in the season that is preparing us for conference play."
 
UP NEXT
The Highlanders will travel to South Beach and celebrate Thanksgiving at the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament. Radford will face Temple on Friday at 1 p.m., and faceoff against Nebraska on Sunday at noon.
