RADFORD SOFTBALL SPLITS IN OPENING DAY OF FIRST PITCH CLASSIC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Radford softball team split in the opening day of the First Pitch Classic after dropping the first game of the day to Dayton, 3-7, but bounced back to defeat host Charlotte, 8-0, in five innings on Friday at Daughtridge Stadium.

GAME ONE
The Highlanders fought hard in the final innings, but couldn't overcome a five-run first inning thus suffering their first loss of the season to Dayton.

After falling behind 0-7, Hunter Mundy blasted a one-out home run to left field to get the Highlanders on the board in the top of the sixth inning. One batter later, Hannah Medlam roped a triple down the right field line. Talia Douglas, the next batter up, hit her second home run of the season and cut the deficit to four, 3-7.

Radford got something started early in the seventh inning as Brianna Mills picked up the first hit of her career, but got thrown out trying to take third on a passed ball. Three quick outs ended the game and gave Dayton (1-0) their first win of the season.

Kayla Huffman entered the game with no outs in the first inning. She only allowed one hit in six innings of work. Huffman gave up two runs, both unearned, and struck out a season-high seven batters. The two runs came in the third inning as two flyers scored on a dropped fly ball with two outs in the inning.

Jessie Marvin (1-1) recorded her second start in the circle and surrendered five earned runs on four hits, suffering her first loss of the season.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  The Highlanders outhit the Flyers 6-5, but only scored three runs.
•  Talia Douglas was the lone Highlander to record a multi-hit game. She went 2-for-3 with a single and a home run. She scored one of three runs and drove in two.
•  Hannah Medlam picked up the first triple of the season for the Highlanders. She now leads the team in doubles and triples.
•  Hunter Mundy had the Highlanders other long ball. It was the sophomore's second home run of the season. She was credited with the other RBI as well.
•  Kayla Huffman was stellar in relief on the rubber only allowing one hit, adding seven punch-outs. She allowed two runs, both unearned.

GAME TWO
The bats came alive for Radford in the second game of the day as combined seven runs scored in the first two innings was the recipe for success in the 8-0 win over Charlotte.

Marissa Gagliano set the tone with a leadoff double in the first inning; she advanced to third and scored on a Hunter Mundy sac fly. Maggie Rowe gave the Highlanders a 2-0 edge with a single up the middle, plating Sofia Tapia.

The bats got even hotter in the second inning as Radford scored five runs on four hits and took a 7-0 lead. Tapia drove in two with a one-out double to left center field that made it 4-0. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, Gagliano scored and made it 5-0 after Talia Douglas got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The sixth run came via a Hannah Medlam infield single, while Mundy scored the final run of the inning as Marissa Yow reached on an error.

The 7-0 lead allowed Abby Morrow (3-0) to settle in and be aggressive as she earned all four of her strikeouts in the first three innings. The senior did a nice job of getting out of bases loaded jams in the third and fourth innings.

Gagliano drove in pinch runner Callie Morgan in the fifth inning, which gave Radford an 8-0 lead and put the run-rule into effect. The Highlanders were looking for a 9-0 lead, but a nice throw from Kiersten Berrier out of center field put an end to the fifth inning scoring threat.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
•  The Highlanders tallied eight runs on 10 hits in only five innings of play.
•  Marissa Gagliano went a career-high 4-for-4 – three singles and a double – with two runs scored and one RBI.
•  Six other Highlanders recorded one hit in the game. Sofia Tapia had the only other extra base hit for Radford, a double and tallied a team-high two RBIs.
•  Abby Morrow picked up another complete game shutout. The complete game is the 50th of her career, which places her in a tie for fifth place with Laura Jewett in career complete games at Radford.
•  Morrow didn't allow a run and struck out four only facing 22 batters.
•  Hannah Medlam, Talia Douglas, Maggie Rowe and Hunter Mundy each had RBIs in the contest.

QUOTABLE
"We had a slow start this morning that got the best of us. While Huffman came in and pitched a great game and we outhit our opponent, we just made too many crucial mistakes early. The team bounced back for a great second game. Abby dominated in the circle and the bats came alive. We need to continue to learn and grow from our miscues; all while maintaining our aggressive style of play." ~ Hope Creasy
