RADFORD TOPS SAINT FRANCIS, 13-8, TO OPEN 2018 SEASON

GAME INFORMATION
  • Score: Radford 13, Saint Francis 8
  • Records: Radford (1-0), Saint Francis (0-1)
  • Location: DeGol Field (Loretto, Pa.)

LORETTO, Pa. – Six different Highlanders scored in the Radford women's lacrosse team's 13-8 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) at DeGol Field Friday afternoon to open the 2018 season.

Junior midfielders Callie Bonnel and Juliette Ruland, alongside sophomore attacker Lindsey Carroll, led the charge as each recorded a hat trick in the contest. Junior midfielder Emma Rogers added two goals while sophomore midfielders Brittany Rinaldi and Amanda Paino provided one each.

With the win, Radford begins the season 1-0 for the first time in program history. Kicking off each of the last two years against the Red Flash, the Highlanders fell 8-23 in 2016 and 10-15 in 2017, but got revenge in their third season of competitive play.

Saint Francis earned the first couple of chances to open the game, but sophomore goalie Jenny Davis was there each time to either force the shot wide or make the save.

Ruland was the first to find the back of the net, scoring with 27:25 left in the first half. Bonnel added goals is quick succession at 19:37 and 18:35 before Rinaldi scored in her Radford debut to put the Highlanders up, 4-0.

The Red Flash battled back, cutting their deficit to 4-3 before another Ruland goal with under a minute to go in the period ended a 14-minute scoreless stretch and sent the Highlanders into the halftime break with a 5-3 lead.

Radford's offensive firepower was too much for SFU to handle in the second half. Rogers and Carroll were held without a goal in the first period, but scored the Highlanders' first four goals in the second. With 20:26 left in regulation, each had already found the back of the net twice to push Radford's lead to 9-5.

Ruland completed her hat trick with 16:15 to go, Carroll found her third tally with 8:47 remaining and Paino earned her first goal of the year with 6:47 in the game to all but seal the victory.

Even when it looked like the Red Flash may have a chance to get back into the game late, Bonnel split the defense and fired home the final goal with 58 seconds left, bringing the game to its final score of 13-8.

QUOTABLE
"This is a great win for our entire program. Each year we've opened with SFU and this year's outcome really shows our progress and where we are going this season. Our defense was strong today and Jenny was phenomenal. Callie and Juliette played hard like veteran middies. It wasn't a pretty win and we have a lot to work on before we play Robert Morris, but for now we are enjoying this win." - Head Coach Haley Marvine
