RADFORDS DROPS HARD-FOUGHT 5-4 MATCH AT WINGATE

WINGATE, N.C. – Playing its second consecutive match in the Tar Heel State, Radford dropped a hard-fought 5-4 match that came down to the wire against NCAA Division II Wingate on Sunday afternoon.

The match was played under the NCAA DII scoring rules in which all three doubles matches counted as their own point and were played to eight points.

Wingate jumped out to an early lead as Daniel Belsito and Josh DuToit defeated Carlos Sala and Matko Varga in No. 1 doubles by the score of 8-1. The Highlanders then proceeded to take the next two doubles points.

Rodrigo Magalheas and Alexandros Caldwell teamed up to defeat Duncan Addison and Josep Canyadell in No. 2 doubles 8-4. The duo of Michel Meekers and Robin Calais sent Radford into singles play up 2-1 after a back-and-forth 8-7 win in No. 3 doubles over Matthew Jones and Enrico Giacomini.

Wingate battled back to take a 3-2 lead, collecting wins in No. 1 and 5 singles. Caldwell evened the match with a solid 6-3, 6-4 win over Canyadell in No. 2 singles.

Meekers battled hard against Jones in No. 4 singles as the match would put one team in the driver's seat with a 4-3 edge. However, Jones collected the point for Wingate in a 6-3, 7-6 decision.

After dropping the opening set 3-6, Varga stormed back to take sets two (7-5) and three (6-3) in No. 3 singles, knotting the match 4-4.

Coming down to No. 6 singles, Tamir Geva battled back for a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Sala to clinch the match for the Bulldogs.

Radford will return to action on Friday, traveling to NAIA member Bluefield for a 12 p.m., match.
