OXFORD, Ala. – Radford received a strong performance of one-hit ball from starter Ryan Sande over six frames, however Jacksonville State tallied four runs in the final two innings, collecting a 4-2 series opening win on a walk-off three-run home run.

Sande turned in a career day on the bump, setting a new career mark in innings pitched, while matching a career-high with five strikeouts. The junior had four perfect frames, including three straight in his final three of the performance.

Spencer Horwitz handed Sande a 2-0 lead in the top of the third as Luke Wise led off the inning with a walk and Horwitz followed with a two-run blast to center field. The round-tripper was the ninth of his career.

Through the first five games, Radford has scored seven runs in the third inning.

Sande took the lead and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom half of the inning as Straton Podaras erased the first two base runners of the inning with back-to-back strong throws to second. Runners are 2 for 5 against Podaras on the season.

The Gamecocks did not record a hit in the inning as Sande walked all four of his batters in the frame, hitting one. Radford avoided the disastrous inning as Tren Simpson fouled out to Podaras, ending the inning.

Radford only managed three base runners in the final six innings as Richard De la Cruz recorded two singles and Colby Higgerson walked for the second time on the day.

Jacksonville State starter Garrett Farmer kept the Gamecocks in the game after the two-run third as the righty limited the Highlanders to only two hits through six innings, recording a career-high nine strikeouts.

The Gamecocks saved their offense for the end as Nola Greckel and Clayton Daniel snapped Austin Gerber's six-inning scoreless streak in the eighth. Greckel walked on four pitches and Daniel closed the gap to one run on double to right-center.

Austin Ross came on to close out the game for the Highlanders, striking out the first batter he faced. Ross then allowed a single and hit batter to put two Gamecocks on base for Isaac Alexander. The freshman shortstop walked it off with his first collegiate home run for a 4-2 Jacksonville State comeback victory.

QUOTABLE
  • "Well, we got what we deserved. We had opportunities early and late in this game to add runs without even needing a hit. We just were unable to come through with productive at bats. I need to have our guys more prepared to take these crucial at bats." ~ Radford head coach Joe Raccuia
